I did a search and found nothing. I have owned my car since 1998 and the AC has never worked. Every year I tell myself I am going to fix it, but I never do. I only drive my car maybe once a month so I guess it’s come time for me to decide what to do. I also run an off road h pipe and have no emissions in Minnesota. So I am thinking this spring of pulling out all of the smog stuff and the A/C. Is there any benefit of doing this besides removing weight from the front?

How much weight will I lose if I remove…
-The A/C and all of it’s related stuff
-The smog pump related stuff
-I am not sure offhand what to remove. Anyone know of a website detailing what parts you can strip off?

I removed the A/C completely from my 88 a while back with the Ford racing kit.. that included evaporator core, condensor, lines, compressor, receiver/drier.. everything. I felt zero gain. The only real benefit I got was that the engine bay looked a lot more spacious, and I had lots more room to mount a tranny cooler than I did before.

My advice to you is if you have ANY doubt in your mind whatsoever about removing the A/C, then DON'T. I got stationed in Arizona right after I removed mine. The few pounds I shed was of little importance, while I was stuck in a traffic jam in 115 degree temps. Talk about a huge mistake.

The weight you save is hard to guess.. but the compressor probably weighed 10-15 pounds, the evaporator core 3-4, the condensor 5-10, lines, drier, probably another few. I would say unless you're a hardcore drag racer or something, the weight won't do a thing for you.

I don't think the drag on the smog pump is a whole lot, so don't expect any huge gains from deleting it.. probably just another weight savings thing, and a cleaner looking engine bay, for sure.

The A/C removal is pretty straight forward, there's write ups all over the place for both it, and the smog pump.
