Smog Pump Removal?

smog pump plumbing

Hey man I was at the Ennis Texas Fun Ford Weekend and me and my buddy were talking to Billy Glidden. I'm sure you know who he is, anyways he had the smog pump on his car. He told us that if you run hoses from your valve covers down to the pump. Then run hoses from the pump down to your exhaust and weld the inlet pipe in at a angle so it will creat a vacuum. By doing that the pump removes all of the crank case pressure (which is high on charged or boosted engines) and dumps it into the exhaust. I'm in the process of building another car that is EFI and that will be one of the first things i do.

Billy Glidden uses a Vacuum pump like this.

And they only work if the motor is built EXTERMELY TIGHT.

Some say that removing the air pump will hurt the cats. I ran mine with no air pump and cats for about a year before swapping to the offroad pipe and couldn't tell any difference  . I ended up removing my air pump because it was squeeling and removing it was cheaper than replacing it. If you are looking for performance gains though look elsewhere you won't notice any difference.

i took mine out and didnt notice any sort of difference at all. It really doesnt do that much anyways. It only helps control emissions when the car is cold, because the exhaust gas cant be recirculated. good luck man

Don't take your air pump off. First it is illegal and you can be fined up to $27,500. Second you probably won't notice the whole 1/2 a hp you get from removing it.

It depends on emission laws as to whether or not it is constitued as illegal. That same rationale could be extended to off-road h/x pipes, tint, and light covers.

Personally I knocked the smog pump off of my engine. Not only is it one less thing you have to worry about going bad but also it cleans up the passenger side of the motor for you to work on easier. As it was stated above though, don't expect any change in performance.

yea i agree with uvbnhad. i didnt do it for performance either i did it so i could get to my f'n spark plugs and to shed a few unecessary pounds from the front of the car. approx 15-20 pounds when u remove the pump, check valves, and all the hoses. i think thats the only reason its worth it.
