Whats up fellows? Im usually on the 4.6 fourm cause i have a blown 99gt, but now i have to stangs. I bought a 87gt the other day and it smokes. Could any of you tell me if it may needs rings or just put thicker oil in it.

what color smoke? Black generally means running rich, blue is oil and white or steam is coolant

I would run a compression test and see what number you come up with. Then squirt some oil in each cylinder and see if the number just up a good bit. If they do then more than likely your rings are worn. By adding the oil it helps the rings seal and can hopefully point you in the proper direction of where you are loosing compression. You might also want to do a leak down test as well and see what the results are.

Thats normal, what kind of miles does it have on er? I know mine smoked a little, I took it out one day, started makin rod knock, then I pulled the engine to find that there were 9 piston skirts in the pan, along with about all the rings, it still ran good, just smoked with a clanking noise LOL. This is not typical at all, as most lincoln town cars you see smoke, and still run fine. But it would be best to rebuild the shortblock, running thicker oil is just a band aid to the prob.
