I think it will too. If not I'll make a relay. Time to get some amp wiring together and test it

Okay, partial success so far.

Plugged radio in car, hooked up wiring to dash speakers and using the rear 6x8s temporarily and had music. Unfortunately its only tweeters, so I had no base til I run the sub wiring. But everything faded in and out fine. So far so good. Of this was a non-external amp radio, I'd be done.

I didn't show the worrying here for obvious reasons. It's really just wire for wire basic stereo splicing and pretty easy.

The amp lead-outs however different story. I think I got them wrong. I did some testing prior to hooking them to an amp. Basically I have 4.5 volts DC current from center to shield on each RCA. Guess I may have my wiring wrong. Need to double check now.

No, 7V will not turn on my aftermarket amp. Tested it tonight

I'll have to use a relay or something.

Only thing left to do is that, and see if i have music out of the RCA's.

Okay, figure I explain my wiring a bit.

The main harness is pretty easy. Take a look at the wiring diagram in post #48, connector C290a. Pretty much just wire it up to the metra harness directly. Pretty simple. I left pin #2 unhooked as i guess the SN95 provides voltage in start and run to prevent radio from turning off. The fox doesn't have this

As for the amp wiring, here's what I did.

Connector C290b

4 and 8 are your amp turn on leads. These are +5-7V DC when active. Will be a prob turning on an amp that requires 12VDC. You only need 1 of these wires. So tape the other up.

1 and 2 and 5 and 6 are the wires you want. Go to radio shack and get some RCA's. You just need 2, but use different colors. Split them, and cut one end off. Separate the RCA's into the shields and the cores. Twist the shields together and solder to the negatives (5 and 1) and then solder the positives to 2 and 6.

Just try to remember which is which. Pin 1 and 2 are your front amp, which means it will power the two door speakers. Pin 5 and 6 are the rear amp, which means the rear hatch speakers. I used the RED RCA for the Rear speakers (R for rear) and the white RCA for the fronts.

The Mach 460 is wired in a messed up way. The head unit controls 4 tweeters which are stereo. So any stereo imaging is done with the tweeters and HU only. Mach 1000 has a little more punch to the tweeters than the 460.

The mid/lows are driven off two amps. One for front speakers and one for rear. These are MONO signals. SO whatever amp you use will need to be able to do MONO inputs. So my white RCA is the front mono and the red is my rear mono. 1 input, 2 speakers.

Of course..this info is pending my testing. As of right now, major radio wiring is done, and i have my 4 tweeters working. Just need to find a way to us a 7V AMP turn on wire to turn on an amp needing 12V and then i can confirm the sub wiring. A little work, but this is actually fun to do.

That might take care of the amp turn on. Had a coupon I got in mail, Sp got it for $3 from best buy.com!

Okay, just to update, I ended up buying a 2003 expedition audiophile unit off eBay. It was for parts only as the faceplate was smashed up, so I got it for $10 or so. I simply swapped faceplates.

Reason for this? No built in crossover to the speaker outs. So all 4 channels off the head unit see full frequency. So this gives you four speakers....plus you can use a line output converter to create RCA outputs to am aftermarket amp.

I can't figure out the amp output wiring from the head unit. but I'll keep trying with the other head unit. In the meantime, I might install the expedition unit for now and just run 4 speakers. Then when I figure out the sub wiring, I'll install the aftermarket amp and maybe change the head units as well.

Btw...expedition radio p/n is 2L1F-18C815-CE. It's the "audiophile" premium radio. Looks identical to the 01-03 Mach 460, but no crossover on the speaker outs. Wiring diagrams only show one sub output signal, but my testing shows output on both sets of sub wiring.

It would be, but I don't think it will fit. It's taller. You'd need to redo the whole center area to mount it.

I'm almost done. Figured out then sub part but had to order a inexpensive part. Just waiting for it to come in and test itnthen I'll post up what I did.

After that, time to put it all in car.

Assuming I have everything all set now....was a little tricky figuring out the wiring, but in the end it was a fun project....even though still not done.

I think I'm giving up.

I don't think this is gonna work. The basic stereo is easy, so if you do a non-sub cd6 setup it's easy as pie....but running a head unit with the line outs is not possible IMHO

Just reading up on various forums, the line out from the Mach 460 ISA balanced output setup with three wires...pos neg and shield. I used a converter called a Soundgate LOCB.2 and it worked, but there was a lot of white noise I just can't get rid of plus I was informed my amp would not survive long with the dc voltage that is output from the head unit into the amp.

So...I've called it quits.

I'm not gonna install the entire Mach system. I was just trying to use the hu only and almost succeeded.

What will I do now? Prob just nitpicking a clean looking aftermarket deck and go that route....although I am disappointed since the 6-disk setup looked decent in my console. Oh well.

At least I can toss it all back on eBay and recoup my costs.

Btw...i solved the 6v amp turn on issue from the cd6 radio with a PAC TR-4 remote turn on.

Anyway, now to figure out how to do a clean 6-speaker install using 100% aftermarket stuff

Kind of a bummer.. I really liked this idea.

I have my stock HU still in my car, and I really don't want to spend money on an aftermarket one (i actually have a 6 disc out of my Escape i could have attempted after i saw yours).

I still may just keep the stock HU, and run a small box. Do something and piggy back RCA's off the rear speakers. Not something i've done, i always usually use an aftermarket HU and do it properly.

I decided to just simply scrap the setup and run a stock stereo. I don't even listen to the radio in the Mustang. 99% of the time i drive it, the radio is off.

So after pondering it, i'm just gonna put the stock OEM stuff back in. But instead of my stock 1988 4-speaker radio, i'm gonna swap in a 1993 6-speaker system with the 80-watt amp under the pass seat and either the 91-93 tape player or preferably the 1993 oem CD player (if i can find one)

Won't be using the cardboard speakers...got some Boston acoustic speakers instead.

Only question i have is since my car was a 4-speaker setup, i need to figure out the door speaker OEM wiring. Where does it tap in? The wiring in the doors was not there, but i figure i can tap speaker wire into the factory wires under the dash whereever those are?

thats probably what i'll end up doing.. Just getting some decent speakers. I'll make some RCA taps into the rear speakers and install a box with 2 8's just so i have some bass.

I honestly don't know about the door wiring? I would assume they would be wired up just disconnected somewhere, but i guess not? I would think you can tap any speaker wire from the front - however i dont know how the 6 speaker system works.
