I'm building a T5 which came from a SN95 mustang with the longer input shaft. It will be going into a fox with the normal 5.0 bellhousing. I already have the shorter fox-style input shaft. I just want to double check that the front bearing retainer needs to be shortened. It should be shortened by 0.650", right? Thanks.

That is correct. I double checked myself and found a couple of solid references by builders that also said 0.650". This would be SPeace-ATL over on the Corral, nxcoupe on Modded Mustangs, Chris Neighbors down in H-Town, TX, and the guy that builds my T5's.

A ford racing steel bearing retainer is only $70 at lmr, isn't that the easiest route?

I would double-check with them. The steel retainer is superior in every way and cheap insurance.

Agreed and when you build something for someone whether it be a favor or for money, honestly as a builder you can't afford to cut corners or do things that could compromise your work.
Recipe for complaints or doing it twice.

Cheap upgrade and just general peace of mind, get the steel retainer.

Can you cut down the old one and clean up the edges( I haven't done one before) for $70 labor?

Will it be on his dime if it's not machined correctly or fails and wastes your time?
It's bad policy to let a customer make this decision. If they were qualified to make it, they would be rebuilding it themselves.
