I might be buying another fox soon and i am just wondering if its advisable to buy an 87 or 88 stang? Since it has No MAF what does this mean? I cant mod ii too much???

What are the pros and cons of MAF???

If one retains the SD system, it just means you have to be savvy about the parts you pick (esp regarding air flow and vac signal). Worst case you spend a couple bucks and convert to MAF.

I know people can get into mods w/SD, but most dont. I think if you stick w/stock heads and cam, should be ok, can get intake manifold, and other bolt-on w/out problems. I had an 87 gt auto, just converted to maf when I did my heads and cam.

SD cars are great as long as you keep the mods simple. They make great 12 second cars. All you need is a 65mm throttle body, gears, exhaust, an intake. SD cars run awesome! They just have limitataions with the stock computer.

I ran (and still run) SD in NMRA Factory Stock and if I'm not mistaken, the majority of the pushrod cars run this.
Now I ran a stock cam with E7's and had a best of a 12.03 with a few light weight parts inside the motor. But it was nothing exotic.
I have presently put together a junk yard motor and GT40's with an AOD and have so far gone a 12.32 on BFG Drag Radials.
The only issue I had was the tunability allowed by the NMRA. We are only allowed a chip. There are a few setups out there that allow you to tune the SD. If they were allowed in FS, I would have ran one.

You can do the same mods as you can with maf but you are restricted to a maximum of 24lb injectors and what type of cams you can run.. im installing a nx264 cam in my speed density car next month ill post results...
Also when your modding SD the most important thing you need is a afpr so you can tune the car by 'upping' the fuel pressure. With tuning you can do alot with a SD engine :)

Ya with 24lb injectors you really have to know what your doing and actually have mods that require it.. like a mild 347 stroker kit , ported stock heads and intake , cam , exhaust , 24lb'ers etc would work decent with SD and be a tourqe monster :P

Ya HISSIN50 , but for the majority of things your good for 300hp with the 19 pound injectors if you up the fuel pressure and thats enough to get you in the 12s which is what alot of people are looking for.

I didn't want to bother with the SD headaches so I converted to mass air. It didn't cost me anything to do it either being that I got the computer and MAF meter for free, so I couldn't pass it up.

Heads, intake, all the general bolt-ons are valid options with SD..the cam is a tricky one though. Cams affect vaccume (forgive spelling) and vaccume is one of the main componenets the SD system uses to gather required info. I ran SD untill my modifications required me to convert..the conversion was via FMS kit..easy, and VERY effective. Your question of should you bother with and SD car..I don't know..but I sure as heck am glad I did..been a great car for me, and a true joy to own.

He is right the cam is a tricky thing with SD cars,if you are gonna mod a SD car a (crower 15511) cam and a (comp cam nx264hr) are 2 cams that I know will work with SD.I have a 87 SD car that I adore and the crower 15511 cam is the one im goin with when I get the cash.(16...Minimum wage job  ) give me your email address and i will send you a sound file of both those cams, hope iv helped.

I was simply hitting/reiterating points made by others. Some SD computers simply dont want to play nice with 24's. My comments were not made in regard to anyone's set-up or injector needs. :)

Derek said it well. The vac signal is critical on a MAP car. When one runs a cam with diminished vacuum signal, the puter sees this as the car being under load, even though it is at idle. So the TPS and MAP signal dont match and stuff starts to get funky.

As Purple commented, there are several very nice cams out there which work well on most SD set ups. It takes more work with a SD car, but a lot of guys do it for the sake of doing it or because we are stubborn and dont want to swap. :)
