Hey i don't currently own a mustang, but i might be getting one this weekend. It's an 86' 5 speed coupe and it has mods done to it. Here's the list of stuff done and i was just wondering if this is a good DD setup. And to see if anyone could tell me the ball park range on what gas would be.

Mods:

- .20 over size JE pistons with molly nitrous rings
- stage 3 comp cam (519 lifter ratio)
- edlebrok carb
- nitrous wet kit 175shot pill
- fresh electric blue metallic paint
- new 5 speed jericho tranny with possie diff
- flowmaster exhaust
- weld racing wheels with new tires

That's what i was told that was in it. So any help at all would be awesome!

86 Mustang

I don't see anything that would not make it unstreetable. The cam might be a little much.
Two things I would invesigate futher are the transmission. T-5 World Class transmission came/come in in a great variety of torque ratings. Torque ratings range from 230 ft-lbs to 330 ft-lbs. You should have a transmission of at least 300 ft-bs. for that motor. Search this site for info on T-5 transmissions. The article tells you of the history and gives torque ratings per the model. There should be a tag on the outside of the transmission that identifies it.
The 86 came with a smaller rear end than that of 87-93 models. The 79-86 had a 7.5" ring gear. The 87-93 had the 8.8" ring gear. This site also has pictures of the two to help identify. The 79-86 had less horsepower than the 87-93 models, thus the smaller rear ends. I think you should have the 8.8."
Gas Mileage heavily relies on the rear end ratio. The ratio is also on a tag on the rear differential housing. 3L08 is 3.08:1 ,3L55 or 3LS55 is a 3.55:1. You could find2.73 , 3.23 or 3.73 in addition to 3.08 or 3.55 The "L" means limited slip. Some people claim 20-23 MPG with a 3.08

^he hasn't given me any decent pics of the rear end yet. I doubt he even knows about the car considering i asked him what motor he had in it (302 or 306) and he said "306 i think" which if i'm not mistaken it should have a 302 in it..so i'm a little worried about him not knowing what it has in it. I'm guessing the rear end and transmission are stock seeing how he didn't tell me anything about either one except it is a jericho transmission. i will find more of this out from him when i talk to him, thanks for the help/advice!

Not a 5.0 meaning it is no longer a 302 block? Post some pictures so we can take a look at it. Also, what wheels does it have on it? Skinnies on the front SUCK for a daily driver, when I first bought mine it had 3" skinnies, horrible to drive on the freeway, it would find a rut and follow it. When I put the new brakes and rims the car was a totally different animal.

Nope. The '86 V8 cars have the exact same rear end setup as the 87-93 V8 cars. To clarify, if this was originally a V8 car, it does have the more durable 8.8 rear end.

A 306 is simply a bored/honed rebuilt 302. Nothing to worry about. Actually, if it really has been bored .020 over, it should be checking in at 304.6ci. 0.030 over is a more common bore, which would make 306ci. Either way, its really just splitting hairs.

A jericho? Ehhhh, I don't know about that. Post pics.

Being that the car is carbed worries me. Either it is a V8 swap car or its been hacked by a previous owner. '86s should have been EFI.

Does the car still have the original iron '86 heads? Is so, its not going to be very fast without the spray, and that cam is probably a poor mismatch.

To answer your question, no, its probably NOT going to be a very good DD and it will probably NOT get very good gas mileage. But YES, it would make for a good hobby car, a lot of people around here would love to have a 4-eye coupe. Lets see some pics!
