That is exactly how I avoided trouble a few years ago. Crackhead breaks into my car alarm goes off. I grab my little .22 and confront crackhead. Dude makes a run at my with a screwdriver so I shoot him in the leg. He turns to run shoot him in the arse. Did not say anything about this when I called the cops I only wanted one patrol car at my house. So when he ask if I could ID him I told him to check the hospitals the told him about the screwdriver and how he got one in the arse after he threw it at me. Needless to say I still had to drive myself down to the station and answer questions for awhile. They run my registration etc, find the crackhead. All is fine. In retrospect I should have sued the crackhead for the .35 for my two bullets.
As satisfying as that might be, it's a horrible idea. People who are shot, but not killed, committing criminal acts have successfully sued their shooters. If you ever, EVER pull the trigger on your gun with the intent to shoot someone, always shoot to kill. Dead people can't sue you.shoot them in the leg.
