Spec stage 1 or King cobra?

actually I really like my Spec stage 3. Its overkill but still a very light pedal. The only bad experience I have had with Spec is when they are not properly broken in. Also their throwout bearings included are not 100% reliable, but I have found most aftermarket are crap anyway. They use Timken bearings, its just that some seem to make noise.

I have driven several stangs equipped with King Cobra clutches. Eventually, they all went out after routine use. My impression is that the King Cobra is a decent value for the money, but usually does not hold up to repeated racing in a car that approaches the power limits of the clutch. The SPEC clutches, when properly broken in, have held up to some very hard drivers. My stage 2 has been excellent. One of my close friends has promptly killed nearly every clutch known to man. The only one that held up to his driving was a stage 3 SPEC. Unfortunately, the tranny was not so lucky...but that is neither here, nor there. I would recommend the SPEC over the King Cobra. If you have the coin, pop for the stage 2 SPEC.

spec sucks, ask turbo92pgt or caucstang, both have had bad experiences with them.

well I dont agree, I have had spec in both my mustangs, with heads cam intake, bolt-ons etc. I used the stage 2, Mine was broke in properly( HANKS TO HELBIG :) ) and has held up for almost 3 yrs of racing, and let me tell you I learned on this clutch how to do burnout and Ive had my fair share of "clutch" burnouts and its just now starting to slip which IMO is a long life.

I've had both in seperate cars. Also drove one with the centerforce dual friction. Spec is by far the more user friendly and more durable clutch IMO. On the Spec, either go with the stage 1 or 3, dont go for the 2.

1 more for Spec, I have the stage 3 and it works great, very light pedal effort for the type of clutch it is and holds all I have very well. Best clutch I have used in a mustang yet and the first one I would use again no questions asked.

The generalization I usually make is given a power adder or high HP engine with a stock trans, a Spec Stage 2 will usually be the weak link, where a Stage 3 will usually favor taking out the trans. Again, this is VERY generalized.

A Stage 1 is just a better than stock replacement and a stage 4 is basically a stage 3 with a solid hub (very harsh engagement). There is also a stage 5 "Slipper" clutch.

Got mine from Brads Custom Auto, forget how much it was though. This was a little over a year ago.

It is a good clutch when broken in properly... and with minimal mods it holds up quit well. Start seriously upgrading and you may find it lacking.

So who has the best price for the spec stage 1?

You have several options but I'd call Brad's they are close, I'd get the steeda quadrant and cable (optional firewall adjuster) but they are nice to have but not really needed.

Specclutch.com has a list of dealers I think.

So your going with the spec ?:D good choice.. 500-700 CITY MILE break in... :)

There's also the SPEC 3+ Its supposed to hold more power than the 3 but mine was total garbage. I have a stage 5 now that I'm gonna install over the winter. Hopefully it will hold and wont explode like many of them have.

...and if Misha cant burn up a clutch, it can't be done.

:flag: (oh, I run a c.f. in mine, but Im not a big fan of it... if I were to do it over I would get the Spec)
