Which cam should I use with a speed density 88 LX 5 speed? I understand they reccomend converting over to mass air, however, I dont want to convert now. Is there any type cam or brand you recomend? Thanks
There are plenty of cams you can use with speed density. The main thing you need to look for is a good vacumme signal for idle characteristics otherwise the computer will assume it's under a load & run too rich.
Look for cams with a wide LSA (114ish + but maybe a 112 if the vac is high enough).
Lift isn't a consideration beside piston to valve clearence & valve spring bind.
Duration really shouldn't be too much over 220* @ .050 lift.
You may want to check out www.50tech.com (alot of SD folks running cams/ intakes / heads on there)
One of the more popular cams used in SD cars in the Crower 15511 cam. Think the specs are 218/224 @ .050 and 469/496 lift on a 114 LS. Comp cams also has several cams with similar specs on a 114 LS.
Can someone explain what in a cam alters the vacuum? I have stage 2 ported Windsor Jr heads with 600 lift springs. I plan on running 7/16th stud mount 1.7 roller rockers to add lift which I know this does nothing but add lift meaning it doesn't alter the vacuum at all. I want to clear .500 lift with these heads but I noticed that the Crower cam mentioned above has alot higher exhaust than intake. Would I have any valve/piston issues with that much lift on exhaust? Basically .499 intake and .526 according to the specs above and figuring on .30 extra lift for the roller rockers.
Stock with 1.7:1 RR. No fuss, no muss! Besides, unless you've got heads/intake, exhaust, etc to go with it. It's not worth the trouble to swap out your cam anyway.
