have a leak under my 89 auto stang and tried to locate it. the cable housing is dry and cracked and falling off. does fluid actually get up in the cable housing. it is probably like 8-10 inches from where it goes into the tranny. the cable is completely dry coming off the tranny until it gets to this spot which makes be believe that the way the cable is setup it lets fluid run up it for some reason. any input is appreciated.

Yes, as far as I know, fluid can run up the cable. I've been having issues with leaky speedo cables ever since I bought my car two years ago. If you replace the cable, I've heard people say that the only ones that don't leak are OEM Ford cables.

I've tried two cables from D&D Performance, since that's where my trans is from, and both have leaked, so maybe the OEM cable is the way to go.

Yes, trans fluid does flow into the cable.

I bought an aftermarket cable and it leaked. I tracked it down to the crimped part between the plastic shaft and metal end. I fixed it by cleaning it really well and smearing rtv over the crease. Then I put a piece of electrical heat shrink over all of it and let dry for an hour before driving.

Been leak free ever since.
