Other than Ford, is there a company that sells a Ford speedo cable replacement for my 88 GT?? I have 2 problems with the orignal. 1 is that the needle jumps around from say 25-35 mph. I know this is common but I want it fixed. The second problem is that I cant keep the cable from leaking trans fluid from the piont where it attaches. It has a small leak and it drips down onto the exhaust. Thanks.

I don't think my issue is so much the cable as the gauge cluster, itself, but I've got the bouncing speedo, too. It usually gets crazy about acting up when it's colder outside (anything below 60* and it gets really weird-acting).
Pull your VSS (at the tranny end of the cable) and see if your speedo gear is chewed up. Mine's still good, hence my suspicions about it being the gauge cluster (260k+ miles and counting!).
The tranny fluid leak is probably due to the O-ring around the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) that plugs into the tranny. You can either try going the cheap but PITA route of finding an exact-sized replacement O-ring - everything I found was either a hair too big to fit in, or too small to do any good - or just buy a new VSS. (I ended up taking the latter route, myself.)
FWIW, my Pioneer speedo cable (from Autozone) has been working just fine for about a year and a half. Can't say the same for Pioneer's clutch cable quality, however - that turd snapped on me after about 9 months.

Yep I would point to the gear, a broken or chipped tooth. Theyre both such cheap parts though why not replace them. I got my cable from NAPA also so that's my vote for that.

yep 5 minutes will change a speedo gear......including jacking the car and setting up some axle stands

just keep an eye on the gear clip so it don't fly across the floor into a drain or something stupid like that lol

Alright so it could be screwed up! i forgot about the clip that holds the gear onto the end of the cable, it's reaaaally small. And you might have shaky nervous hands. This could be disaster.
The gear I have is about 2 yrs old and I'll look to see if its bad. I am replacing the trans as we speak so that will be easy. I just need to keep this car from being such a leaking pig. A little drip here and there is ok but leaking onto the exhaust is a little much.
