Actually, now that I think about it, my buddy with a '90 notch and 3.73's has had to replace his speedo gear twice, now, because it keeps getting chewed up ... and that's with the 8-tooth internal gear. Such strangeness...
As far as higher-count speedo gears ... weren't some guys running a speedo gear out of a Jeep for 4.10's? Or was that the same white 23-tooth gear already recommended?
That's the one, part #J3167393 - I got mine at the local Chrysler dealership. You can get em at Ford dealerships as well, but they just buy them from Chrysler and mark em up lol.

From what I've heard, above a 20 tooth speedo gear gets chewed up over time. I've had mine in there for 2 years now and it still works (though I've driven the car only 5K miles). You would know when it's been chewed up beyond working condition anyways, because your tach would just bounce or stay at 0rpm.
Edit: If I blow this T-5 in the car now, I'll definately get a 6 tooth drive gear put on the tailshaft of the next tranny. Should have done that 2 years ago when the tranny was swapped, but I didn't know about differences in drive gears until the new one was put in and my speedo was way off!
The stock range of speedo gears work correctly with a limited range of tire sizes. The 23 tooth white gear works good for some guys, but self destructs in a few months for others.
Check to see if there is a speedometer shop in your area. If there is, ask about the Stewart-Warner speedometer gearbox. I believe it is either a 777 Series Drive Joint Kits and Parts or 666 Series Drive Joint Kits and Parts. It is a small gear box that fits between the speedo pickup gear on the transmission and the speedometer. It has quick change gears that allow you to choose almost any tire size and rear end gear ratio you want. This will allow you to get the accuracy within 1%-3%. The drawback is that it isn't cheap.
Please excuse the typo (their's, not mine) in the following picture - it should read Custom ratio adapters, not Custom radio adapters.

8 toother here, chewed one up, when I checked it out she looked liek she was about to fail. Gonna look at the one I put in while I'm staring at the car and see what it looks like.
I'm wondering, then, if I can go ahead and plug a 23-tooth gear in mine and hope it works ... or will a 23-tooth speedo gear work AT ALL with a 7-tooth internal gear? (I mean, does it work with the 8-tooth ONLY, or what?)
FWIW, we just found out yesterday that Frankenstang's Capri has 3.73's and a red speedo gear in perfectly good shape ... and that thing's been in there since sometime in the early 90's.
23 toothers are white. As cheap as they are, I'm not going to bother with anythign but 23 toothers until the tranny comes out, then I'll change the tailhousing one. I would order a backup speedo gear just in case it does chew one up you won't be stuck without a speedo for a week. There easy to change too. My first one lasted for several months and still worked when I swapped it out.
