Speedo/odometer faliure?

Was your speedo ever corrected for the 3.73s?
If so and you used a speedcal make sure it has power and is still connected properly.
If the speedo gear was changed instead, it may have gotten chewed up.

The two items H What mentions is what you need to check first. My Speedcal loses contact, I'm guessing form vibration, every now and then and I have to tighten the connections. If you just have the white speedo gear then it is gone. Went through that before I bought my Speedcal.

I may be missing something, but he has a mechanical spedo in a 97, a speedo gear is the only way to fix a speedo that is off..... I thought only 99+ cars had elec speedo's...... Again, I may be wrong here. My speedo is correct in my 98 and I don't know of any speed cal on it.... (4.10 gears were in it when I bought it).

The speedometer and odometer are driven by different gears. If they both stopped working its likely that it is an electrical issue and not a mechanical one. In my car the speedo works but the odometer and trip meter stopped working because the teeth on that gear are worn down. They sell the gears on ebay for like $39.

I'm not sure of the exact logistics of how it is converted from mechanical to an electrical signal, but a 97 has the gear in the trans which goes to the Vehicle Speed Sensor which sends an signal to the speedometer. You can either install a speedcal which taps into the VSS wires to correct the output for the rear end ratio, or install a smaller speedo gear.

The 99+ can correct this through the cars computer via a tuner (XCal, Diablo, Etc.)

Is the speed sensor on the drivers side front of trans, back of motor area? I was looking under the car today and I see a eletrical connector looking thing hanging down in that area. I tried to hook it back up but could not get a good handle on it without jacking up the car and Im at work, dont wanna get dirty. Could this be my problem?

Yes, thats the VSS..... drivers side of trans towards the front... right by the shift tower if i remember correctly

If your saying its not connected? Then that's definitely your problem.
