Speedo Problem

Yesterday when I was starting up my car to adjust the rockers, the speedo moved and is now pegged way past 150mph allt he way to the little stopper. How do I fix this? Is there a way to do it without taking the gauges out of my car agian? :bank: I really dont feel like doing that.

How old is your battery ? It almost sounds like a symptom of a battery short. I was just there last week. My battery is the original factory 95 battery that came with the car. While doing the compression testing I killed it but the funny thing that happened was I heard buzzing from relays and my speedo started jumping all over the place, even with the ignition in the off position.

My guess is it's your battery. Try another battery out, even if it doesn't fit properly. Just borrow one from another car and hook it up. See what happens.

With the way it is I'd be going about 220mph It spun all the way around and is touching the other side of that little needle stopper.

can someone explain this?? i thought the speedo was completely mechanical. how can the battery affect it??

when i finished my head/cam swap, my speedo was stuck on the pin below zero. it didn't change while driving, so i assumed that the gear came loose somehow. that's just one of the things i was going to fix when i get home for summer.

any explanations?

Nope... its electrical, but uses a gear in the tranny to get its readings from. If you pull the gauges out, you'll see the plugs in the back.

so what exactly happens when they get messed up? how can a different battery fix the problem if the original battery still works otherwise?

i think i have the exact same problem as you.

I have no clue if the battery doesnt work, I'm going to take the gauges out, take off that clear plastic covering, and spin the needle back to where its supposed to be.

If the battery has a short, then electrical shorts can do all kinds of weird and wonderful things. I don't believe there's any hard and fast explanation for it.

I GOT IT FIXED TODAY! Kinda weird how it happened. This 50th anaversy Vette flys by me on my way home, then slows down and I catch up to him. He never lets me get up even with him so when my front bumper was at his rear he'd floor it and so would I. He only pulled a little on me until I stopped. As for how I got it fixed, I just looked down and it was working again
