My speedo in my 89 LX is driving me nuts. It will eventually coast up to about 40 and stay there. The odometer and trip odo seem to be working fine. Any ideas on a fix for this?
Not that I know exactly how to fix it, but if you pull the instrument cluster, and the speedo cable out of the back (its a bit difficult, but will come out), you can shoot some lubricant down into it.
Mine had a nasty squeek in it that for the longest time I thought was my belt slipping, but could never figure it out. Turns out it was my speedo. A little lube and I never had the problem again.
If its not that, it could be the gears that cause it to spin. Possibly they have issues, but I always prefer starting simple then working up to the harder problems.

Great advice. Although if the trip/odometer seem to be working fine it's most likely the speedo head it self. Havent seen too many problems w/ the trans gear drive or the cables in these things. Not to say that it couldn't be, I'm just going by history.
Well, I tried lubing the cable just for the hell of it, and it didn't help. Must be the head. I'm about ready to put it up for the season and start the next set of mods anyway since we've had no summer here in NY.
