I have a 65 with the round gauge package. I've searched and found a few other related posts, many people said it was the cable but my issue seems different. Today the needle just started pulsing back and forth, the faster I go the wider the sweeping and it is clicking. It also stopped adding miles. I'm going to pull it apart but if I don't see a problem with the cable are there any plastic gears or something that could have worn out or stripped causing the clicking. Another thing, it had just flipped the thousand digit 29000 and stopped at 29009.9, can they bind Like most old cars the digits don't line up well when they flip 100,000. I'll post back what I find or fix

thanks
mike

Mine also broke. But it was working fine with the old cable I had, then the old cable snapped. I replaced the cable and it started acting really goofy after I replaced it. But my mileage still works Now the speedo needle just sits at like 190mph. So I think I'm just going to get a used one off ebay.

I said I'd report back. In this case, procrastination paid off. Didn't get to it and after about a week it started working again after driving on some crappy roads which must of jarred the digits loose. It must of been from the mis-alignment. Coming up on 30,000 so we'll see if it happens again

no such luck more me. I bought a used one off ebay. Installed it and it worked fine for about a week. All of a sudden it starts going crazy again and now it just sits there not moving. It's doing the exact same thing my original one did. I dont know what the hell is wrong with my speedometer setup. It has to be that new cable, do I need to lube up that new cable with something?

yes the cable does need lube on it. you can use a combination of atf and white grease to lube the cable. just put some into a rag, mix it well, and run the cable through that part of the rag.

Did you replace just the internal cable itself, or the cable and sleeve. I've been through this 3 times myself.

First one, the end of the cable broke off. It would still manage to catch every now and again and work, but not consistently. So I replaced the cable and sleeve.

Second one, I didn't route it tight enough and then about 2 days later it lay down on my exhaust, and melted that sleeve right into the cable.

Third one, I made sure it wasn't going to touch the exhaust again. Worked for about a week, then stopped. In my zeal to ensure it wasn't going to rest on the exhaust, I neglected to see if it wasn't going to ever touch the header. Melted again.

But the fourth one! The fourth one stayed up! (Anybody every see Monty Python and the Holy Grail? I felt like the king in the swamp!)

I replaced the whole shebang, just not the speedo gear in the tranny. I have it routed where it shouldnt be getting near the exhaust or headers. I'll have to try lubing it up.
