speedometer cable

Speedo stopped working yesterday..
(G Force T5/Autometer gauges/JME cluster)

Got under car and the cable was wrapped around the hole that the cable/sleeve is suppossed to go into. There is about 3-4" of cable sticking out past the sleeve. Can I just trim the cable (and if so how should this be done)
and reinstall the cable?
Or is it safe to assume that since there is 3-4" inches of cable sticking out the sleeve it has become detached at the back of the gauage?
Any suggestions on how I should proceed?
Thanks,
Scott

What do you mean wrapped around the hole. The picture that comes to mind to me isn't a good one. It recalls to my mind of a tow rope wrapped around an axle, rope tangled in a boat prop, etc.

If you mean anything like that I'd say the cable is toast. To my knowledge these cables cannot be trimmed.
