My speedometer in my 89 GT bounces and makes rattling noises. I was wondering if this is due to a faulty speedo cable or is it the instrument cluster? The noise gets really loud at freeway speeds and will vary in volume and even become silent at times. How do I fix this? Thanks in advance for any help!

could be the speedo gear or the speedo drive gear. Pull your cable and check it's condition. They are about $7 from ford and take about 5 minutes to change

It sounds like a dry speedo cable. The sure fix is to replace the cable, but I have had some luck by removing the instrument cluster and spraying dry graphite down the cable housing. It doesn't always work and when it does it is sometimes temporary. I would recommend replacing the cable.
