Speedometer Problem helpppp

I got a 91 LX 5.0 with a broken speedo and i have a new cluster for it, but will it still fit because my car has an airbag and the new cluster doesnt have the oval slot on the bottom what should i do or can it fit in there??? help thanks

For your 91, you'll need a speedo between 90-93. Sounds like you have at most an 89. Not only won't it fit into your 91 due to the air bag, but the speedo doesn't go up as high as the 90-93 do. The 90-93 are 140 mph. The 89 only goes to 125 mph I think.

Some of the later '89 cars were fitted with the 1990+ speeds that read 140 MPH. The 1987 and 1988 cars were fitted with 85 MPH speedo's. For the early 89 cars, Ford used up the stock of the 85 MPH speedo's before making the switch to 140.

FWIW: the federal government made a law in the early 1980's so that every car came with a 85 MPH speedo to help curb speeding which was a growing problem.

My 1989 was built 1/89 and has the 140 speedo. I am pretty sure there weren't any other changes.
