SPOUT Connector?

I set my timing at 14* and it seems to idle fine with the SPOUT connector off. When I put it back on the car idles like crap and surges.. jumps between 500-900 rpms.

Am I suppost to have the spout connector in now that I changed the timing or do I keep it out because it's not at the normal 10*?

You install the SPOUT connector after setting timing. The only reason you remove it so you can set the timing without the computer jacking it around.

It's normal for me to get a little surging when I first install the connector, but then it mellows out after about 5 seconds.

You can try disconnecting the battery afterwards to see it that helps (get your codes first!).

If you left the connector out and ran at 14* advance, the car would run like a piece of flung poop.

It doesn't run like flung poop though, it runs better with the spout out.

try setting the timing at 25-28 degrees with the spout out if your going to run it for a while with the spout out

I didnt say that it would idle like poop. 14*total timing is WAY too much like me - retarded. If that's what feels best for performance, we got problems.

I think you were simply noting that it idles nicely like that. I'd agree with you there - it should be VERY stable with the SPOUT out. It just doesnt allow for the compromises required in every dynamic, and ignores performance and economy considerations.

I didnt post to be a smarty but to clarify what you're seeing to make sure that you didnt think the car had great performance at WOT (etc) with the SPOUT out.
I agree with Urban - I ran at 26* locked out for some time and it did fairly well.

I had mine at 16* with spout out and 91 octaine, no problems.

Matt, you set the timing to 16* and drive it like that (without the SPOUT connector installed)? I gotta ask why?

The SPOUT connector just disables the O2 sensors so the car doesn't adjust timing itself with lean/rich conditions right? So the reason my car runs fine with the SPOUT connector out is that the car isn't listening to the O2's.. when it's in it listens to the O2's....

Sooo.......my O2 sensors are shot?!

Matt, I thought so.
What Urban and I were referring to was running locked-out timing. You set it at a medium number (like 28*) and then never install the SPOUT again. The timing just stays at 28* - no advance occurs.

It gets confusing when we refer to setting the timing SPOUT-out, vs running locked-out - I think that's where we lost you (it's easy to do when reading a thread quickly).

ZSZ, the SPOUT has nothing to do with O2's. The O2's light off and fucntion on their own regardless of about any other systems.

You can use a voltmeter to kinda get an idea about your O2's. As they age or get contaminated, their amplitude (.1 to .9 volts) and frequency diminish (they dont have the range they should, and they dont switch as quickly as they should).
