Sputters bad when down to 1/4 tank of fuel?

A girl my wife works with said her car sputters really bad sometimes but notices it worse with just a 1/4 tank of fuel left. What could this be? Maybe a fuel filter or trash in the tank or the fuel pump. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry no I haven't, I only wanted to post something if I could be helpful. I have no experience with this.

Could be a weak fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. The weight of the fuel in a full tank might be helping push the fuel through so it only starves when the tank gets empty.
