Stangs in the shop...what to buy?

Happy 4th everybody

I'll be dropping my car off to get my exhaust installed (SLP II), window fixed and bearing replaced. Since they will be working in the transmission, I plan to replace the clutch but what else is recommended? Gears? Looking to not spend more much more than $1k and here's the list so far:

Exhaust - $180 (labor)
Clutch - $250 (parts) + $250 (labor?)
Bearing - $50 + $100 (labor discount since tranny is out?)
3.73 or 4.10 Gears - $180 (parts) + $100 (labor discount?)

I'm going off of your 1k including the tranny work and most everything on that list. Tranny work tends to be expensive so make sure you get a solid quote if you are looking to stay under that 1k budget.

Most people on here are going to tell you to do gears. But considering your goal of 300hp (i'm assuming to the flywheel) I would say for you might want to consider doing a mid pipe instead because that can yield some decent gains and should not be expensive to get done.

I actually just got done with my catback install...had a friend help and it was alot easier than I thought. Haven't looked into a mid pipe but is that something I could pull off installing?

The mid-pipes are purely bolt-on. I did mine myself without any help and I thought it was a PITA simply because I didn't have the best jacks and the clearence off the ground was extremely tight. If you have some high-lift jacks or even access to a lift, it should be a breeze!

Before I had my headers I opted to go to a shop to get my midpipe installed because it was a PITA to reach up to the exhaust manifolds w/o a lift.

YES !!

If you and a friend could tackle a catback, the midpipe is also doable.


You can search the tech section for instructions/write-ups on how to do it...


Basically if you have a jack/jackstands/PB Blaster (or similar), socket wrench w/ extension, maybe a breaker bar/pipe to slip over the wrench handle for extra torque, and...

...in my case - a mid-length 15mm socket for the passenger side exhaust manifold-to-factory-H-pipe nuts (because the "deep" socket would interfere with surrounding metal due to its long length and a "shorty" 15mm socket would not allow enough "depth" inside of the socket itself to slip all the way "down" onto the nut to loosen it, hope that makes sense)...you'll be all set.
