Starter gone bad I think

Yep, jumping the two big lugs is the brute force test (solenoid not used).

If you jump the thin wire to the battery feed terminal and it starts, the solenoid works (the first test bypasses the solenoid completely).

Good luck Chris.

Why is this?
Generally one does not want to use a super low (numerically high) gear to compression start a motor. For instance, I use 2nd or 3rd (you need just enough rolling inertia to turn the motor over). If you have had to pop start crotchrockets, you know the importance of using a higher gear. :D

JT is such a helpful guy :hail2:

I have had to pop start the 250, but not my Gixxer. I'll keep that in mind if I ever do.

I can imagine how a low gear like reverse or on a bike how bad the jerking would be. Damn...that would be scary:eek:

Sheesh, all this talk about love pills and jerking............. :rlaugh:

Grady, as far as knowing and sharing useful tips goes, when I grow up I wanna be like you. :nice: Owning lots of crappy cars and bikes has taught me a few tips.
Grady, to date ourselves, my first street bike had a kickstarter - I wonder if the younger guys have had a street bike with one. :D

Oh, Chris, I found the balance thing to be an issue with popping it in 1st gear - nothing like having the motor bite and jerk ya hard after you just hopped on and popped it. I normally used second.

I think standards (i.e. UJM's) are easier to hop on and pop. I tried not to kick the fairings on the 750 or literbike while running - that was hard enough for a big ol' guy like me. :bang:

Lemme guess :D

Ridin the bike :nice:
&
Chasin skirts ;)

Grady

lol, I've been riding the bike a ton. Chasing skirts? Yea, but not as much as I'm riding the bike! :D

Yea I can't imagine pop starting the Gixxer in 1st then it would take off like a bat outta hell and I'd be standing right back where I started watching the bike rocket down the road (probably on it's side at this point, lol). :bang:

But is it harmful? I have had to do this many times getting out of my garage, and have to do it tomorrow so I can figure out what is up with my starter.

I'd like to see how this goes. I have the same problem, but my old starter did this and the new stock replacement one does it too. It did it on my 306 and my current 331 and neither have LT's. I also got some of that DEI heat insulating wrap and wrapped the starter and it does not help any. I finally gave up and now I just let it sit a min. or two. and it usually cranks quick enough to get the car started.

Mine actually ended up being the main ground was loose. Might wanna check that REAL good first if you're having hot start issues. I checked mine, and it was tight, but not tight enough. It's gotta be TIGHT!

My battery is in my trunk. I had my main ground inside there and I thought that might have been a problem so I moved it to the frame rail where the quad shock mount used to be on the pass. side (quads removed so I have no need for the mount). Cleaned it real good, torqued it to 80 ft-lbs, and covered it in rubberizer (undercoating stuff) to keep it from corroding. I doubt that's the problem. Any other ideas?

This info is what I've seen several times in threads over the years.

Peeps ran the appropriate size cable to the neg batt post and all mystery probs went away.

Go_Stang, I am with the others. For quick diagnostics, one can use a spare jumper cable. Hook it in parallel with an existing cable and try starting it. If you can get reliable starts during testing, the cable you are paralleling is likely deficient.

Good luck.
