Starter will not shut off!!!????
Just bought a 86 McLaren w/5.0 and 5spd.
When I try to start it the cellinoid and the starter will keep running
after the car is Running!!!!
It will also stay on with the keys out and if I disconnect the battery
if I put the postive back on it will start again!
I have run out of ideas this is what I have replaced.
Starter
5 cellinoids
Postive battery wire
Negative Battery wire to the block
Ignition switch
Key set(Thought it could be sticking)
Alternator
Voltage Reg(on back of Alt)
New Battery
On occassion if it does keep starting if I smack the Cellinoid it will shut
but not always
The only other thing I can think of is the starter wire to the Cellinoid
And Finally after a while I disconnected the Module on Dist so it would
crank but not start and it kep getting stuck!
Any ideas I have no more Maybe a pic of a Cellinoid hooked up might help.

does the little trigger wire on the solenoid stay energized when you move the key to run (from start)? i would put a test light on the wire and see if it stays illuminated when the key is not in the start position. if it does, the wiring and/or interlock devices are at fault.

if the little wire is dead when the starter is continuing to run, i might suspect the solenoid. some folks have not had too good a' luck with parts store versions.

the starter itself could be hanging up, as well. but if when you cut the battery cable, the starter does disengage, i might discount that idea (that the bendix is staying engaged).

on 87+ solenoids, the battery side (closest the firewall) has all the battery/alt etc lugs. the front lug has only the starter cable.

good luck.

Sounds like a starter relay that doesn't know how to shut itself off. Also like hissin said the solenoid (bendix is famous for it which is why PMGR was invented) could be jamming and not disengaging the starter gear like it should.

On the 86 the solenoid the wires should go as..
Front lug Batt Alt and accesories one closest to fire wall should be just
the starter AND the Ignition wire should go to the starter side
because the Ignition thread on the solenoid is smaller
what volts should the batt read running and not and how can you check
for a good ground for the solenoid.

And Who makes a good Solenoid???? I have tried 5

PMGR = permanent magnent gear reduction starter. It's the technology most starters today use to engage and disengage the starter gear. Bendix had a problem with the starter gear sticking to the flywheel/flexplate sometimes so that was what GM invented to fix it - now pretty much all starters use it (including upgrade starters for the 5.0).

so you mean a mini starter?do they come with only 1 wire setup?

the volts read as 12.22 at not running and around 14.40 running
it doesn't do it every time.what causes the solenoid to stick?
and is there a way test them first?
I can't believe I hav 5 BAD solenoids

Merc, first off, do you have enough vehicles? :)

im a little confused about what you said in post 4. what is the deal with the starter trigger wire (should be a very small gauge wire - perhaps 12 or 14 gauge)? i am not clear on the differences between your set up and the 87 up foxes. i dont see how you could have the trigger wire on the starter cable (i admit i probably misunderstood or dont have a handle on the differences).

for tests (my line of thinking based on 87 up cars), see my first post (to determine if the trigger wire is staying hot when it should not be, that would be a biggie. go from there. if my post is too confusing, you can search for a post by Jrichker (on starter solenoid issue threads) - he has a nice write up on testing that is similar to what i (less eloquently) said.

good luck.

Yes I do have enough cars

The Marquis is FER sale :D if I could find a clean Spoiler Car
I would get rid of few.
Yep I screwed that up in the post
I was meaning the 2 small threads on the solenoid 1 is I and 1 is S
they say put the Ignition wire to the S side of the solenoid

Had same problem

This is the second time changing my relay. After taking the first one apart i noticed alot of arc/soot or dust along with some rust so replaced it thinking it was just old. Here i am two years later with the same start sticking problem. Took this one apart and didnt really notice that much rust but did notice a build up of arc dust/soot. I am positive MY problem was this relay as when i tested it Without any voltage it was in the start(closed) position still. I am not sure if the little wire that activates the relay/ has foreign voltage and mistakenly closing the circuit. Or if it is the ignition sticking at the steering wheel even when the key is out as this would send votage to the relay to close the circuit(start). I remember ford having a recall on somthing with the ignition switch but haven looked into it yet.
good luck.
