Do you think it would kill anything? Only the flywheel is on the engine and it's supported with the stock supports and a rope so the engine won't drop. I need to finish the project and get the engine running but I don't have a manual flywheel yet and the clutch isn't here yet... Not that I'd rev the piss out of it, just to get it going a little.

Well, I'm never short of a different opinion -- I'd wait. The engine makes a heck of a lot of torque, and it's designed to be constrained by the motor mounts AND the tranny mount in back. I'd want something a lot more secure than a rope -- so it's not just hanging off the front mounts. Be patient - you're almost there.
Curious though - how are you gonna mount the starter with no bell housing or crank it with no flywheel? And you wouldn't want to run it with no flywheel anyhow.

You at least need a flywheel mounted as the engine uses the energy stored in it to carry the pistons through it's paces.

I was faced with this scenario and decided NO, it will be too unstable and could invite catastrophy. Just my opinion.

my 2 cents-if youve got the front of the motor supported well then it should be fine.I wrok on big rigs and when we do a clutch job we replace the rear main seal to make sure it doesnt leak we bolt the flywheel on and run it for 30 minutes.You cant rev them up or anything.The only thing that suports them in the back while you do this is a bottle jack on some 4x4.If youve got it out of the car then just be sure the front is supported very well.I might also add that big rigs have 3 engine mounts.1 in the front and 2 on the side either on the bellhousing or on the block.

No, you don't need the transmission bolted in place, but I'd be interested to see where/how he'd mount the starter without the bell houseing?squeeeg said:

Besides there is a reason as to why the flywheel MUST be attatched to the engine to make it run properly. It is not just there to turn the engine via starter over but is a momentous force which while having all that mass of the flywhell spinning, it also helps keep the engine turning over and over and over - Don't do it.

While waiting for the rest of your parts, I suggest you aim your bracketry and duct tape skillz at rebuilding the carb.
