i know you should'nt drive a car with just a header on it unless you want burnt valves or something along those lines. but would it be alright to just crank the motor over to see if it will actually start (first time ever having gas ran in it). i just got it all together after about 6 month of slaveing over the fenders and i am very anxiuos to see if it will start. all i have is the stock exhaust manifold on it right now (n/a motor). i am waiting for a long tube to arrive, so i don't want to put exhaust on it right away. would this cause ANY harm?

Plug your ears and start her up...wait a minute this a 4cl you don't need ear plugs

Anyways I've driven a few cars open exhaust before ( at least headers or manifolds on them though) down to the local muffler shop with zero problems. Now this may cause a EFI car to run a little rich/lean because of the O2 sensor located around the Cat. I know the 2.3T has the O2 is mounted on the exhaust manifold and should do pretty good but I can't remember where it's on a plain 2.3L.

It won't be a problem...

Oh, and an unmuffled 4 cylinder is louder than a V8...

What side was you standing on

I only have my SVO to go by which probaly isn't much ( I think a turbo muffles the sound a bit) but that thing is pretty quite to me compared to the V8s I've messed with.

Its been ten years since I've heard an uncapped V8, honestly I can't remember to compare. Suffice it to say that was the loudest engine noise I've caused in a while .

I think the volume of the exhaust depends on the engine also. My brother put headers on his '84 F-150 (which has a turd 2-barrel low-po 302 in it), and his exhaust wouldn't fit at first so he drove it with open headers for a couple days....I've heard trucks with full exhaust that were louder than it was.

I think it depends on a lot of stuff like are we talking about a 2.3L or a 2.3T? As for the V8s, SB or a BB? Stock/moded 4CL or V8? Also are we talking at a idle or while driving it or racing it? I've driven just about every Chevy motor with open exhaust from 305 to a 454 and even a stock 305 ( we through in a comp 270 cam which really made it loud open of full exhaust) sounds louder than a open exhaust 2.3T to me. Now again this maybe cause a turbo muffles the sound a bit. If I had to guess I would say a V8 either way would produces more noise than a 2.3L(T) running open exhaust.

I ran my 2.3T with just the downpipe opening up in front of the passenger footwell for about 2 weeks. To me, it was unbearably loud, I think because my car was acting like the muffler. The police, neighbors, etc., never even looked twice at me unless I would get on it.

I could always hear the turbo whine as it would begin to spool up. I was kind of funny cruising next to a semi and hearing thier big turbo and then hear my car with its smaller turbo singing in unison.

A 2.3T is not that loud...the turbo muffles the sound ALOT...a n/a 4 cylinder is extremely loud though (and I still say it's louder than a n/a V8 of similar mod level).

Ya I was thinking the turbo did taht to the noise level of a 2.3T.

Well I still think something with twice the cyl is going to make a much louder sound whether it's at idle or full blast. Now this is just my opinion but it would be cool to find out

i know a V8 running the same flow's i have on my car (96 Impala SS) is quieter then my single flow on my car. Granted the v8 had 2, but it also had 4 extra pistons. My exaust is louder then his LT1 is.

Ummm but what would the two cars sound like without flows I wonder? I think we need to do some test comparing just for the fun of it The question is what V8 would we use to compare with?

How about a 4.6 GT mill(non-COBRA)? Thats a SOHC motor, plus it is small in size.

It's not that a 4 cylinder puts out less sound waves, but an 8 cylinder engine cancels out more of them because there are more pops happening. That is why rice sounds so bad, because you can hear the individual pops.
