I have to get my pinion bearing replaced at a shop, so to save money on a tow and some on labor, I'm removing the rearend from the car and taking it to the shop (getting 3.73's too ) My problem currently is there is a little sensor that attaches to the brake heat shield (I assume it is something for the ABS system) that will not come off. I need to remove this before I can pull the rearend out. I was just wondering if anyone has removed their rearend and knows how this can be taken off the heat shield. Any help is appreciated. Also, any other tips would be nice too

Did you remove the screw that holds the sensor on yet? If not it takes a 1/4 "socket( I believe) Be very carfull working the screw back and forth untill its freed up enough that you can back it all the way out. Then I usually take a socket the size of the sensor and start tapping it out.Just take your time and be careful not to break the sensor.

Ahhh, the infamous ABS Relucter...Those things are such a pain... If your lucky you'll get it out without roaching it...some seize like crazy and have to be broken to get the axle back far enuf to get the Clip out...

Dont even mess with it with it??...let the shop try to remove it....I roached the rears before.. If you have to break them, you can cut the wire in a decent place to re-splice later on... they can be had on Ebay and salvage yards for 30-50 a set...

Good luck...They suck....

Iv'e done 3 sets of gears...twice on mine and roached em once, and barely saved em the 2nd time...i did a 98 GT and they slid out like butter.. much nicer when they just slide out...

Me and my dad have started gear installation and have already broken one of these sensors off and will probably have to break the other one off too. They are a PITA.

Still cheaper than having someone install them though.

Are you sure you're actually saving any money. A shop will end up doing basically the same work they would be doing if you brought them the car, except they'd have it up on a lift and not have to muscle the rear end around, etc. At the dame time you're r+ring the rear for basically no reason. That seems like a lot of extra work for not really getting anything more out of it.

Just a thought...

I'll be saving $100 for two tows ($50 each) to and from the shop (snows here constantly). My mechanic also said he will charge me less if he does not have to deal with the whole car (sway bar, tight spaces etc.) Also, I plan to paint everything when it is out of the car. Things are getting a bit rusty, I want to catch it before it gets bad.

Update on progress: I found that if you remove the rear seat bottom there is a plug connector that you can undo and then push the grommet through the bottom of the floor and then just keep the sensor attached to the rearend by the way, good tip if anyone else gets to do this. , just online to order the 3.73's, should have the rear out in less than a half hour!

Sounds good -- just thought I'd double check and make sure you'd thought it all through. Good luck!
