The answer to your first question is no. The entire timing adjuster has to be there or the car will not run. The CKP must have been put back in its stock location.

A timing adjuster fools the computer into thinking the timing is at the stock setting. The problem with a timing adjuster is that it advances the timing globally (throught the entire rpm range) regardless of load, temp, rpm, etc. This is bad and the timing should only be set through a tune that uses a wide band O2 sensor.

So, forget the tuner and just go straight for an xcal2 and a tune.

and i have a upr crank style timing adjuster and i would not recommend it you could have problems in the low rpm band with detonation if you run too much timing

I agree with both of the above, it allows you to adjust only the intitial timing. However, I ran in an organization that forbid computer tampering so it was the only way I could get more timing out of the car, also, if you're on the road in say..BFE and you get crappy gas some where, it's kinda nice to be able to back the timing down in a couple of minutes with an allen wrench.
