Steeda Tri-Ax install ?

This morning I installed my tri-ax with out any problems...just followed in the instructions to a tee. I get in the car and start her up...no problems. I then turn off all the assesories and cruise around. I notice what I think everyone is talking about being the gear whine, however when I shift into 4th gear it is alot louder then all the others. It almost sounds like a spinning gear is just barely touching another stationary piece of metal. It is kind of there in all the gears if you listen closely but it is really lound in 4th gear especially when under power if I let off then it softens but is still there. My wife who was sitting in the passenger side said she could feel the vibration on her leg when i shifted into 4th gear. Is this just part of having a aftermarket shifter or is something wrong. Another thing I noticed is that it takes alot more force to get it in gear then the stock one did. One thing that I did do that I thought would reduce the gear whine was to coat the shifter with stuff called plasti-dip. Could this be causeing me problems? I don't see how it would but I thought I would ask you guys anyway. BTW this is on a 2004 GT with only 1900 miles.

Shes cheating on you with the Stang!

All that is normal. I have a lot of nose and vibration once I put on the new shifter. It also is a lot stiffer than stock. But the shifts sure are short!

Mine also sounded a little metallically when I first installed it. It was also a little notchy.

After a while it has gotten really smooth and a litte less noise. I finally put a piece of cut up rubber hose between the shifter handle and the body, and it made a big difference in vibration and noise.

Just wondering, do you have one of those billet shifter rings installed? I did and my shifter was hitting the ring and transfering the noise into the cabin.

LOL...I don't think so...she absolutly hates the stang...takes all the atten from me...lol Plus I bought it 1week before the wedding...probably the last sports car I will every get to have.

I guess I was expecting it to be as quiet as the stock one since i coated the handle in plasti-dip. Plus this is my baby and any little ping or crazy noise and I get all freaked out

its normal. When i put mine in i also put both stock rubber boots back on to keep the noise down wich it did. You have to really listen for it to hear the gear whine. Also mine was pretty notchy and hard to shift at first but that goes away. Mine loosened up and is as smooth as butta baby. ! Love it

I freaked out big time when I first installed mine. Everyone told me it was normal...since I have been in several mustangs with the TriAx...and it is totally normal.

No I got the new MGW composite race knob:

The noise is diff. coming from the tranny underneath the shifter.
Unless your are talking about the ring that goes around the shifter handle that keeps the leather outer boot from going down into the shifting mechanism then the answer is yes.

Yes I was refering to the one arond the handle. I had put the on from the left side and the bolt was hitting the ring. I switched the bolt around to the other side and that fixed my problem.

I like the knob alot......no heat transfer at all (heard some people have problems with that). IMHO not quite as comfortable as the stock leather one but a diff. imporment over there gripper model.

Good tip, when i installed my handle i used a piece of bicycle inner tire tube between the base and handle...helped with noise and the transfer of heat if your using a metal knob....

Use the old stock boot that went over the shifter casing. you might have to cut it a tad but when I put mine over my tri ax it reduced some of the noise

Make sure you are engaging the gears completely. Do you have the stops too far in?

I just installed the Steeda Tri-Ax Shifter on my 2004 4.6L GT yesterday & I wanted to know if it is normal, when you are at a stop in neutral without pressing the clutch, to hear something spinning in the tranny? It goes away when I press the clutch down though. It's like a spinning sound of some sort! Also I can hear air down there when I am at a stop.

Mine has the typical noise, but the only thing I didn't like about the directions is that they have you set the stops in 2nd and 3rd. I set them in 3rd and 4th. You may have an issue w/ it not pulling fully into gear, and unfortunately, the easiest way to check is to pull it back apart and check how tight the stop is for 4th gear.

I agree. From what I've seen, a lot of the after market shifters tell you not to place the factory inner dust boot back on. Well with my total disregard for instructions, I put mine back on. It is a little difficult to get back on, but it can be done. I still hear some whine, but not as much as what you've described.

greater whine is normal, (I mean think about it, your bolting a virtually no rubber, all metal piece directly to the transmission) but it shouldn't be louder in 4th, if anything it should be quieter the higher the gear you go. As someone said above check your stops and make sure they are set properly when hitting 4th, i am guessing the stop is a hair too close and causing some added vibrations....

I bought a couple of neoprine washers and put those between the shifter and shifter handle. I did it mostly to keep the shift knob from getting so hot while I'm driving though.

My ax does the same...people are like "whats wrong with your car"

But like was said...your are bolting metal onto metal....so the shifter pretty much acts like a "tuning fork" for you transmission.

And the faster the d/s spins, the more noise there will be. I have just learned to ignore it over the past year and a half. Crank the radio !
