Steering upgrade question

I recently acquired some parts off a '65 Mustang that was being upgraded to a full Griggs setup. One of the parts that I got was a rebuilt quick ratio steering box. It has the short shaft and stops at the bottom part of the coupler/rag joint. Of course since mine is a '65 it has the long shaft, so I would have to take the whole thing out and replace with the later shaft. Since I'm doing that, I figured it would be a good time to go to a tilt steering setup. So, my first question is any opinions on ididit vs Flaming River? I'm not into adding chrome to the interior, so I'd either get powder coat black or get steel and paint myself.

Second question is what parts would I need? Would I order for a '67 or later since the box has the short shaft?

If it matters, I plan to go with a LeCarra type steering wheel in either wood or leather.
 
just a personal opinion here, but i would looks heavily toward the Ididit columns. i have heard horror stories about the electrics and the cast tilt pieces in the FR column, though that was a few years back, can't say i've heard anything lately but i'm rarely on the computer much anymore either.

anyway, i made my mind up to use the ididit stuff a long time ago, however, i have no actual personal experience with either, so take that advice for what it's worth.

personally, i actually like the style of the new ididit retro fit columns as oppposed to the FR columns too. especially for the early model cars as the column actually necks down to meet the steering wheel or year specific adapter whereas the FR column does not
 
Just put an ididit column in a few months ago. I did my share of over researching as well. I got the blk powdercoated one, great quality unit. I initially paired it up with a short shaft box as well, pretty simple swap.

For the time being, you can use your stock shaft with the short shaft box, just pull out the 65 long shaft box and cut the shaft just beyond the box. You will reuse the separated 65 shaft, and notch the end to make a D shape. Then just use a coupler or rag joint to join to the short shaft box.

My new setup required R&P, so have a NEW FR short shaft box for 65-66s if that one doesn't work out for you.
