You don't have to pull the column to replace the steering link, you just unbolt it from the lower steering joint at the base of the column and unbolt it at the rack pull it out the fire wall into the engine compartment. The noise from what I could tell was from a combination of the slip joint and the rag joint. But most of the play was in the slip joint. If I was you I would slid your head under the dash and look at the slip joint very carefully while wiggling the steering wheel back and forth. Also is you have jack stands and such, slip under the care and have a buddy wiggle the wheel while you look at the rag joint. Sometimes with things like this, you can feel them more with your hand then you can see them eye.

im climbing under tomorrow

i did go under the dash and everything was good to my surprise..the clicking sound sounds like its comimng from inside the rack when your under the car,,and sounds like its coming from in the column when your in it?????
i hadnt had someone turn the wheel yet, only pull the tires cause of the lift...

tomorrow i WILL!!!!!! find what the problem is...unless i get into changing my projector fan.3000$ infocus projecter w/8hours use time and a fan croaked!no warranty

I have a similar problem but no clicking. I have about an inch play in the steering wheel. I know its right at the shaft joint but I believe its just not tightened all the way. I'm gonna get a longer bolt in the morning and tighten it down so it really clamps. Thats the only thing I messed with so its gotta be the problem.

i found it!!!its theu joint looking thing ..the first joint coming out of the firewall...its tricky!!unless you turn the steering wheel while your looking at it you wont see the inside..and on the inside theres rubber grommits or bushings..and one of them are GONE causing a nasty click and play in the wheel..
how do i change it???it dont look like its gonna come out easy..id like to just slide a couple of cut washers in there or something...when i jammed a gasket from a sink in there it worked like NEW,,but that wont stay in there..i wanna fix it right but i have no clue how to ???/any help would be hot

Are you talking about the slip joint? it's the first joint after the fire wall, or are you talking about the joint that looks like a u-joint? I would replace it with a new steering shaft as I did with mine. I would go with an aftermarket shaft the ford ones seem to wearout quickly. I'll look at mine next week when I get off of work and see if I can come up with something. Talk to you later, Adam

its the first joint coming out of the firewall..it looks like a mini u joint..but theres rubber bushings...it looks like im gonna have to disconnect it from the rack up to wherever else it comes off??maybe that joint comes apart somehow?im gonna rig it up some ,, temporary...its reallyUNBELIEVABLE HOW MUCH THAT 1/4 INCH OF RUBBER AFFECTS THE WHOLE STEERING!!!!YOU could hold the wheel straight and tight but if the tires go into a groove the car will go its own way, caust that small play in the joint equals to 1 maybe 2 inches of play when it gets down to the rack..thats alot!!!
im wondering if anyone ever welded that part?that would work..but the joint is there for a reason i know...thanks for any help

I think the rubber is there to help with road noise coming for the steering rack. I would try replacing the rubber before I would weld it together. I mean just from the safety stand point it the weld fails then you are going to not have a very good day.

on a side note. the joint that connects to the rack is only about 6inch lower the the rubber joint. If you want to take the steering shaft out to look at. First lock the steering wheel in the strait postion. unbolt the shaft under the dash, then unbolt it at the rack. Then pull the shaft (ya, ya, I said pull the shaft) up off of the steerinf rack, the pull the steering shaft out of the fire wall from inside the engine compartment. With that said and done you should be standing the with steering shaft in your hand.

ITS MIDNIGHT and i just went out to look at it again.im exited i found it. .

that sounds easy to do..thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but..........i believe im going to need a new piece to put there?what a shame cause its a tiny rubber bushing..the u joint is necassary cause its on a nasty angle..welding it wouldnt be an option...

does anyone know if those bushings can be changed????im probably gonna fabricate some bushings if the whole shaft is too much$$ over 100$in the junk yard is too much!maybe i can find a nice performance one?

Hotrodsun, great info on this thread. I'm assuming I could pull my shaft out on my 2002 GT just the same? I'm really wanting that MM solid steering shaft because the play is driving me nuts. I KNOW it's coming from both parts of my shaft. I laid under the car and had my friend wiggle the wheel. I could feel it in both joints. I was also worried it was a combo of the tie-rods + the steering shaft bushings, but I think I'll just worry about the steeting shaft for now.
