My GT Convertable Steering has about one inch of play up, down, side to side. There is no play in the Steering as far as turning it from clockwise to counter clockwise. I have Tilt Steering so was wondering if anyone has ever experienced this? I also have a problem with the Odometer not working while the Speedo works fine.

Thanks

spiderweb1967:

Welcome to StangNet!

What model year, please?

The odo gear is probably broken. You can get a new gear at "speedometergear.com". Also, you can search for "odometer" and find a ton of threads. There is a very good write-up on replacing the gear on this site (it may be stickied).

The vertical movement of the column is not normal. The tilt mechanism may be damaged. You will need to take the cover off the column and take a better look at the 'ratchet' that holds the column in place (at the selected tilt angle).

HTH,

Chris

It is a 96' model year, thanks for the help Chris. I will check the threads regarding the odo gear.

I removed the Steering Wheel and behind the Clockspring looks like there is a compression spring that is broken. Has anyone had this problem?

Hey I'm new here I actually just bought my mustang and I'm having about the same issue. Did fixing that compression spring fix it?
