Stereo ideas

Hey guys, I need Ideas for my stereo for my 68 FB

I wanted to put in a modern head unit with CD and Aux imputs for MP3. I bought the kickpanels from Cal-mustang with the cutouts for speakers. The only thing i am concerned about is back speakers and the wiring. Does anyone have any ideas for the back? Im looking to spend 400 on the stereo setup. Will the 38 year old wiring work with a modern stereo setup?

I would use modern wiring. FB's are a little more tricky as you don't have the package shelf to put speakers in.

Easy way would be to buy some 6x9's and 6x9 boxes.

I ran new wiring for my speakers and power. You never really know if the wiring you have today has been modified in the past.

I used the existing wire for the speakers, but used new wires for the amp. I added an aux input for mp3 player as well.

I actually put my two rear speakers behind the seat. (on either side of the power top pump). I am not sure what the fastback is like, but I would think that there is room. The two 6 ½ kicker speakers sound good even behind the seat. If you can’t find a spot the system should be fine with only two good front speakers and a sub.

I used two 6x9 speakers in boxes and fabbed up a bracket to mount each box to the package tray. I also ran new speaker wires - it's a piece of cake to run them under the door sills, behind the rear panels and come out in the right place to keep it hidden. Whatever you do, DON'T cut up the rear panel or side panels to mount speakers. I hate it when I see this done to classic cars.

I saw this 66 fastback at a show a while back that had the corner pieces fiberglassed with some separates that cam out pretty nice.Myself,I just removed the rear seat and made a fiberglass enclosure with 2 10" L7s and 10 other "full range" speakers.I made a amp rack over the gas tank with 2 amps totalling 2000 watts,i know this is more then what you want.I would raplce the rear trap door with a piece od MDF and put a couple of 6X9's,the trunk would act as the enclosure,a amp would really add to the sound.Be carefull on the choiuce of front speakers, i had a problem on my 65 FB with speaker depth and had to modify the ABS kick panels.

well i have a 66 coupe so i know its a lil different, i put 4 6x9s in the tray out back, used to have 2 12's but got an 18" sub that wont fit in the trunk so its on my backseat right now covered in a black blanket to match teh interior

Trap door

I've got a 66 and will be putting in new sound over the winter. I remember seeing a speaker unit that replaced the trap door in the FB. Remove the original and screw the new on in. That way, you're not damaging the original. As I recall, it's got 2 6x9's and an amp. But this would be a real easy thing to fab yourself out of ABS sheeting or masonite.
