Yall can laugh if you want to but ...... I've never really spent any time to learn about the auto trans in our Stangs

Like Luke, I ain't gonna go over to the Dark Side

However, I've been wondering about this Q for some time now

On a stocker, does it totally lock up or does it slip a bit in overdrive?

If it does slip, how do you stop that chit if you wanna push a good bit more hp to it?

www.tccoa.com tech then tranny.

The converter should slip but not the od band. When the band slips it creates heat and thats bad for it. The way to prevent it from sliping is to use a overdrive piston with a longer rod and it will put more force on the band and prevent it from slipping. There is better info and pics on what i'm talking about on the site I listed.

The TCCoA site that BJL linked to is a really sweet place - I go there for trans info. (and anything written by Jerry is golden, as far as I am concerned).

Guys have rigged up switches to control lock-up manually too (something to keep an eye out for perhaps).

Lots of good info over there for sure.

I went over there and skimmed through a good bit of that stuff with a focus on the basics.

Looked like to me that 3rd & 4th locked up.

That makes me wanna ask another Q.

You know how an auto will put up smaller dyno numbers?

If their 3rd ratio is 1.00 and it is locked......why the smaller dyno numbers?

The converter is not totally locked up. You have to get a multi disc converter to get a total lockup. The single disc converters clutches cant hold the converter to a 1-1 with out slipping. I have played with my tweecer and tried a 1-1 lockup and it would slip when i punched it till it caught then it held decent. If I had a multi disc it wouldent have slipped when i punched it.

Thanks so much for the info.

I've always been curious about that kind of basic stuff when I look at combos who run the aode.

Im not too sure what youre asking, but on my PI STallion, I was told that it will lock up, but only at certain times.. Unfortunately, It's been in over 2 years, and I dont remember exactly what the explanation was.

The aode is a computer controlled tranny, and the converter lockup's can be reprogrammed. So can line pressures and shift points.

I want to reprogram my 95 aode for performance. After research the options, I decided to go with TwEECer.

I also started a GP ($505ea TwEECer RT shipped) on the Corral for to help get the price down:

Only one more buyer needed.

Right, what i'm saying is the converter will lockup but still slip. The computer will lock the converter but it's still not a 1-1. The stock and single disc converters cant handle the stress with only 1 internal disc. I'm having to mail mine back to pi to get it upgraded to a multi disc setup then i will beable to lock it 1-1 with my 418. The single disc converters will still take 1000+ hp but you wont beable to lock it to a 1-1. I want to beable to lock it in all gears so i'm upgrading mine.

I have a few of jerrys ecc tunes for a aode/4r70w and it's alot different than the stock tune with line presures ect.

I was about to ask what you used to tune you AODE? I have never heard of Jerry's ecc tuner. What is that? I have wanted to but something for my AODE to control line pressure, etc but that are all around $500. I was hoping to find one cheaper.

If you guys have questions about trannies, I can help. I try to only hang with AOD/E/4R70W questions on these boards.....

3rd is 1:1 kinda, not becuase the clutch slips in the converter, but direct clutch instead. If the converter clutch starts slipping, you get chatter or shudder.

The TC has a clutch in it just like a any clutch, that is held by fluid pressure. The TC lock up schedual can be altered by program. It can somtimes almost feel like a 4th gear before shifting into 4th. You will notice under throttle, the TCC is not locked up, but let of the throttle, the TCC locks and you get a small thud and drop in RPM. On the big big brother tranny AOD there is no variable lockup, only full all the time in 3rd and 4th.

If the OD band slips you will notice it slipping as you have no accerlation in 4th.

Whhen I was talking about a 1-1 i ment 100% lockup. I know the stock program runs a 80-90% lockup so it slips the converter about 10-20%. I'm no expert on the aode and if this is wrong lmk.
