Stock block power #'s

Hey guys i am planning a build up of all the usual's H/C/I all my usual stuff injectors, TB MAF FPR Fuel pump everything. Then planing on running something like a t76 or around there. What numbers can a stock block handle. Or would i have to go forged

some people have had stock bottom ends over 600 rwhp....but they blew up relatively soon. at that power level not only are the internals a weak part, but the block itself is at its limit. with a t-76, which is capable of 1000 horse and 30+ psi, you would probably want something stronger than the stock block.

if you are set on putting a turbo on a stock block, stick with something in the low 60's.

I'm in the process of having my dart block based shortblock assembled right now by http://www.rnhperformance.net as i plan to make a lot more power than the stocker can handle. I've personally seen stock blocks split at 430rwhp on a supercharged 302. RPM kills the stock blocks too. If you truely want to use a stock block and make it live keep the rpms WAY down, like in the LOW 5000 range max. That will help some. The only problem is the T76 is a BIG turbo for a 302, especially one that is trying to stay alive by keeping the RPMs down. It'd require a SMALL AR turbine housing, I don't know enough about the T76 to know what turbine housings are available but you'll need a very small on, I'm betting in the .6X range. Check with the link above to turbomustangs.com to be sure though as those guys will set you straight with the best choice.
 
Anytime you go above the stock hp you are shortening the life of the block. There is no "safe maximum" number the block can handle. Parts failure is all about how hard you run it and for how long. That being said, Ford rates the stock block at 450hp. Beat a stock blocked 450 hp car at the track everyday though and it is just a matter of time before it goes.

There are rules to live by when making big power, and one of them involves not using a 37 year old block as a base. What would the point be on gambling a whole stack of pricy bolt-ons on a old block when you can spend a small amount extra and have a solid foundation.

pick up the mag and read it. Yo9u would be suprised what you read and see and this is from a reputable engine maker
 
There are rules to live by when making big power, and one of them involves not using a 37 year old block as a base. What would the point be on gambling a whole stack of pricy bolt-ons on a old block when you can spend a small amount extra and have a solid foundation.

...because the 69 351W block is known and regarded as being one of the best foundations for big power out there in the small block Ford world.

because back then parts were built to last.....i see mustangs from the 60's rolling around quite often. what are the odds that 40 years from now you see ANY sn95 mustangs out and about. i would say the chances are slim to none. quality and longevity used to actually be a concern of the auto manufacturers.
 
Best from the ford factory maybe...due to its thicker main webbing. Its kinda a trade off as far as cost IMHO as you have to spend even more money on roller retrofit stuff if you want a roller cam.

I would bet a Dart or Man-o-war block would be stronger than the old 351 blocks. Dart is preaty much the last word on foundation for power in fords.

with a price tag to match. im not saying the retrofit stuff isnt expensive but on a budget, building on a dart block will always be more expensive considering the hefty $1800 price tag right off the bat without even taking the necessary machining to prep the block into consideration.

Umm that is a ignorant thought...sn95 was 94-04 and I bet in 40yrs the percentage will alittle higher than 0%. Hell mine is coming up on 1/2 that now at damn near 15yrs.

The built to last is also up for debate...remember cars were built to be traded in in 1yr when the new body came out in the 60's. You also see alot of messed up oldies out there too.

BUT its the BEST. and how much machine work do you think a 30+yr old block is going to need?
