Stock car + cobra intake = total loss of low end ??

My brother just put a cobra intake on his 91 vert. Car is stock except for the intake w/ 3/8" spacer, 65mm ford racing tb, and 70mm c&l ma tube. After he put the intake on the car totally lost its low end. You can't spin the tires in first gear in this car unless you rev it to 4k and dump the clutch. It feels like it pulls farther up the rpm range but there's *no* low end power anymore. I know when I put my performer on I didn't notice much if any loss down low. Is this normal with the cobra intake?

I'm pretty sure I've seen other folks stick this intake on their otherwise stock cars and be happy with it, I'm not sure it's normal to lose so much low end? Like I said I didn't have this problem when I put my performer on. And I can't imagine just sticking an intake on a car would necessitate 24lb injectors, he still has stock heads/cam. Yes cobras come with 24#s but they also come with gt40 heads, a longer rocker ratio, bigger valves, and a bigger cam. If he was starved for fuel I don't think it would show up so low in the rpm range and not up high...

I say it's a timing issue......

I hardly noticed a low end loss when mine was installed.

That's possible too, I think I'm having a timing issue right now. But there's nothing I can do about it cus my dad jacked my timing light and he's been gone to Florida for a week!!

thats my point the intake should match the combo

the right combo would be the stock intake with the stock injectors because of the stock rockers cam and head thats my 2 cent

personaly i think he needs to go throw his install make shure there no leaks make shure he unplugs the bat. so the ecu can learn the new parts and bump that timing up as much as possible hell get it

A friend of mine put on an Edelbrock performer intake w/ 70mm T.B & EGR, on a stock motor w/ just full exhaust, and CAI, and he said it felt like he gained more bottem end than anything. Hes still got 2.73s also.

I dunno if you've already fixed your bro's problem, but I'm gonna say timing again. Cus the last few days I noticed my bottom-end was nowhere to be found. It started feeling really sluggish. It ended up my distributor hold-down bolt was loose, and my timing was JACKED!! So I set the timing and cranked that bolt down, and now all my bottom-end is back with avengance. So definitely check that timing!

Well he's actually got a whole new problem now, the car is shaking and shuttering at high rpms, he's getting codes 91 and 41, left+right bank lean condition. I told him maybe the fpr or pump, but he's convinced he needs 24# injectors now because of the intake. I guess I'll let him do his thing

Hmm...well if he is having a lean problem I think it is injector related (because the injectors are directly related to the process of an intake swap and not the fuel pump)...not because of the 19's not being enough (they are)...but because he broke a connector maybe or his injectors are not installed correctly...

Check for fuel leaks (did he replace the O-rings or have all the O-rings) when installing the injectors back in...

As some of the others have alluded to...it could be a vacuum leak/timing issue...that was the first thing I thought of before I read the other post...

Probably the "top end" gain you felt really isn't there but it feels like it is because of the "total" loss of low-end...so something semi-serious could be the problem...

Your friends car doesn't need those 24's as you said...

A Cobra intake is fine on stock engine...and those other two bolt-ons are fine also...

Oh and check all connections (compare it with your car if you have to...)...it isn't likely the fuel pump messed up between that time of the intake install...

Good Luck with your friends car :nice:
