Stock Driveshaft Went Through My Floor!!

Just kidding...It hasn't happened yet. How much power & abuse can the stock driveshaft handle? Anyone running big HP number's with the factory drive shaft? My 408 is around 550 Flywheel HP, and I'm running BFG Drag Radial's 275/50R15 with 4.10's in the rear and a Tremec TKO. I spent so much much money on everything else on the car I can't really afford to throw a better driveshaft on her. What should I do?? Should I just chance it with the stocker or spend some cash that I don't have and get something trustworthy?

they say around 300hp for the stock tranny and D/S your just a bit over that so i would deff get the FRPP alum shaft before you kick it out and destroy your floor pan and rear.man with that kinda rear on your sig i cant believe you still got the stock POS.

if you need a cheap fix, get a driveshaft loop, you should have one in anyway. they're like 30 bucks and can really save your ass if your driveshaft does fail.

Thanx 88Stangman I spent too much money on the rear end, that's my problem. What's the FRPP Aluminum rated at? You think it will handle all the power and abuse, especially with slicks? I already do have a loop on the car, but still I don't want to blow a shaft.... it's not fun.

I dont think the FRPP D/S is any stronger than stock, it is just lighter.

With that much power, and 4.10's I'm shocked that you don't have an aluminum driveshaft. I highly recomend one. I think it should be fine with that power and slicks. the next step up from an aluminum shaft is a carbon fiber one, but those can be really pricey. I personally know someone with 625rwhp and the aluminum shaft.

I wouldn't think the shaft itself would be the issue; more than likely the u-joints would snap. I'm guessing you can get beefier ones put on your d/s? And I would also highly recommend a safety loop if you don't already have one.

Exactly. One of the guys at my local speed shop runs high 8s with the same shaft i have, he just bought beefy yokes for it. I think he's somewhere in the 1100hp range, so just over 300hp shouldnt be an issue.

well the alum one is lighter and "supose" to reduce rotating mass. and have stronger welds and there for should have a stronger hp rateing.

The FRPP alum shaft is supposted to be twice as strong with half the weight from what I've read. Althought I have yet to see some tests done on them though.

I didn't have a driveshaft loop at the time either and it didn't go through the floor, thank god.. Only because it happened at lanuch...

Holy BUCKETS...........did you have any prior warning before that happened? It looks like the trunnions on that joint were pretty worn?

The shaft is bent, I don't know if you can see it in the last pic. The joint wasn't probably in the best of shape, but had no sign of total failure like it did. That's what 5 grand nitrous lauch on slicks can turn out... On my old Gt-40 combo.

Uhhhh.. S**T I guess I better throw a better shaft on her just like I figured. Will probably end up thowing the FRPP Aluminum Shaft on. Thanx for the help guys. Any more comment's or recomendation's would be great.

There was this kid back in high school who drove a '79 Malibu with a 406 in it. I saw him just rip into a burnout comming off a stop sign once, and he shattered his yokes like they were make of tin foil. Luckily the shaft just flipped and spun accross the street or it probably would have killed him.

Arent drive shaft loops more for protecting everyone else? I've never heard them reffered to as protection from comming through the floor...but i guess if they can stop the shaft from flying out from the car it can stop it from going up too.

The loop doesn't keep the d/s from coming through the floor and tearing your legs off, but it will keep it from dropping to the pavement, sticking, and catapulting the car end-over-end in the case of a front u-joint failure at high speeds.
