i thought that 85-86 also had forged pistons
You very, very well could be correct. I dont have experience with 4 eyes and only corrected the end point in the range that KTM posted (he started out with the aero foxes). :)

EDIT: oops - this will teach me to load a page and then feed the dog. I was just a little late in replying; everyone beat me to it. :)

I think I remember reading somewhere that if you had a Grey oil pan you had forged pistons and if it was Black oil pan you had the Hypers. Dont know how accurate that is though.

I believe I have seen the same thing -- but I do not know how accurate that is as well. Seems silly to just change the color of an oil pan for different pistons. :D

They may have been changing who was supplying parts to them at the same time and it just so happens that the oil pans changed around the same time the pistons did.

Somebody once told me a great way to remember which color goes with which pistons. It seems that I've forgetten how to remember that. LOL
[wipes tear from eye, reminds himself that no one listens to him]. :)

Dags, it might have been me. My mnemonic device for that is that Grey is good , and black is bad (relating to the color of oil pans). :)

That's it! Now... if I could only remember who it was that told it to me. Hmmmmmmmm......

I have never heard of the oil pan color thing. From what I have been told is all '87-'92 5.0's have forged pistons. '93 hyper's. It was a cost cutting measure in '93 to turn more of a profit. I also think the '93 Cobra's had hypers too.

87- Late model year '92 had forged. they then switched to hypereutectic pistons.

In late model year '92, they switched to hypers. The switch to hypereutectic pistons was also for oil control and NVH.

Unless the owner had to change engines due to minor mishap and he swaped the original grey oil pan onto the hyper pistoned 93 engine.
