Stock gear options?

How many different ratios could you get in the rear end of our Mustangs? And did it differ if they were in an automatic or manual car, non-pi VS. pi car?

As far as finding out what gears are in my car, is there a tag on the differential cover showing the ratio? Id like to find out what is in mine, it tachs right around 2k at 70mph on stock sized tires... I figure that would sound right for 2.73's.

Im thinking about jumping on the gear bandwagon, and would like to know what is in it now.

And last but not least, does anyone have a link to that chart that shows you what you will tach at a certain speed according to transmission, gear ratio, and tire height?

Thanks...:SNSign:

3.27's is what you got. Some pre-99's came with other gears. What you wanna do is jack the back of your car up, rotate one of the rear wheels one full rotation, and while doing that have a buddy count how many times the driveshaft goes around. Four and a bit means you got 4.10's, three and a bit means you got 3.27's, three and a half means you got 3.55's, etc.

So 3.27's it is... I know they are stock gears, but I wasnt sure if the 2.73's were an option... or something like 3.08's.

I was pretty set on 3.73's, but it doesnt seem like thats a big change from 3.27's.

Well if I were to go gears, I would (as of now) go with 3.73's.

I run alot of highways at 60-70mph and I hate for the engine to be taching high at those sustained speeds. Id like to still be able to cruise nicely at those speeds.

Next up is off the line traction. Sure the biggest jump is gonna be going from stock gears to 3.73's, but 4.10's would just be worse in the terms of traction. Not gonna improve any times spinning your ass off.

Still dont know about the 1/4 mile debate. Im not the fastest shifter, so if going from 3.73's to 4.10's will cause me to shift another gear, that would reduce my ET's.

I know everyone says dont fear the gear, but Im not looking for an off the line beast only.

But in my case i have an auto the AOD makes highway driving not too shabby and shifting i wont need to worry about. Plus i have upper and lower control on the way for traction. 3.90's are looking pretty nice right now too, but then id have to het the high perforamce motives and not FRPP

Thanks! thats exactly what i have, any reason you went w/ 3.73? im still stuck between 3.73's and 4.10's

Just because of the possibility that I might be doing forced induction in the future, and the fact that I do a fair amount of highway driving. I didn't want to be taching 2700+ on the highway for 2+ hours, i'd end up shooting myself or going deaf due to the exhaust note/drone. I also see some auto guys talking about running out of gear at the 1/4 track and others say "just get larger tires"...I can't afford larger tires, so therefore instead of worrying whether or not i'd run out of gear or anything ill just go with a ratio that is better than stock, that isn't an arguable point! If you can afford larger rear tires and would be willing to buy them, 4.10's would be perfect too. The way I see it, anything is better than stock.

Good deal. My buddy just got 4.30's in his auto, and my God that think is wicked...:hail2:

Hes got the shifts firmed up via Predator tune and it spins first violently, lets out a nice screetch in 2nd, and slams 3rd like a mother. Fun ride.

I thought about this one a lot too...my 99 Cobra came with 3.27's. I couldn't decide between 3.55, 3.73, 3.90, or 4.10's. Settled on the 3.73's because it's more of a daily driver than a drag strip car and am very happy with them. They made a big difference in acceleration but I'm still getting 18 mpg. Good luck!

well if its a 2000 gt tachin 2k at 70 you would have 3.73s back when i had stock 3.27s it would tach like 1600 at 70 and now that ive got my 3.73s in at 70 it tachs 2k at 80 its almost at 2500

hahahaha never mind i lied i forgot your trannys are different than mine lol so yea youve got the stock 3.27s :D 3.73s are lots of fun but now that i have them i am curious to see what 4.10s would be like but im still debating on whether or not to go blown or stay NA thats why i have 3.73s
