Stock lower intake manifold: Any way to improve?

I've read that the stock lower intake manifold is the bottle-neck of the intake for the 5.0. What makes it so bad with regards for performance? Can any improvements be made to the factory manifold (porting, extrude honning, ect.)?

Tom did the GT-40 on my LX and I'll be sending him the stock lower on my Saleen this winter. He can make a stock intake flow as well as a Cobra/GT-40.
