Yesterday morning on the way to work (180 mile trip) i met up with my coworkers, drove about 7 miles and fueled up at Chevron. About 20 miles down the road we come to a 4way stop I hear a loud clacking over my radio. I thought man that diesel in front of us sure is unhealthy sounding, even for a diesel...then i noticed the clacking was in sync with my right foot when I moved up the stop sign.

F##K! NO way. My motor is virgin, stock from MAF to exhaust manifold. I figured I got ahold of some bad gas as the knocking would stop for a while and everything seemed fine... until the smell of burning oil became overly obvious and i began trailing a huge cloud of black death, and the oil pressure wont budge over 25psi. I went maybe a half mile with it smoking horrible til I was able to get stopped, but it still idled fine and revved normal while pulling up to the resturant.

I had been faintly smelling burning oil and kind of like asphalt, but it started when we got behind the big diesel so I figured it was something he was hauling. Apparently not- the entire passenger side of my exhaust was COATED in oil, the whole underside of the chassis, gas tank and all the way to the decklid and wing was speckled with oil.

I couldnt find the source of the oil, the motor was perfectly fine on top, save for smoke looming from the corner of the firewall on the passenger side. I took off the oil filler cap and it plumed out smoke for a while... the coolant was also black. It was only about 1 1/2 quarts low...so I started it back up for a few seconds when my friends found me and it idled just fine.

Maybe i should have driven it back to the dealership and totally destroyed it so I dont get a rebuilt POS, but alas it was flatbed trailered back to Ford.

Any ideas what happened?

this is funny i have a 99 that jus hit 53k and i have a knock that sounds like im gonna blow a rod through the block... i have no black smoke or loss of oil pressure tho and everyone is telling me its eather a spun bearing or cracked piston skirt... Im pulling the motor this winter to put a stroker block on neways but what bull**** i thought these motors were practically bullit proof

sound like pass. side head gasket is going? loosing oil and its also seeping in to your coolant passage? Take sparkplug out and see if its coated with oil. And bet of luck to you. there is someone else here yeasterday that his engine went. His is by the sound of it - is DEAD. hope yours isn't bad
