stockfivepointohitis

hey guys, chronic stockfivepointohitis is acting up again, and Im looking for something to give the 'vert an inexpensive kick in the pants. Ive made inquries like this in the past, and you guys have given me great insights (such as trickflow hci vs. a supercharger) and Id be pretty confident putting together a $3,000 setup for the car ;) unfortunately, I was planning these bigger mods for later down the road, and Im tight for cash now

Ive been pretty much set on a wet shot of nitrous now. Theres used kits that also include a bottle heater and purge in the $300 ballpark, pretty big gains for the cash spent. The only problem with this is.. I know Id be going through bottles and bottles, and every time you hit the spray on the stock longblock you take a chance.. so I dont know if this is really what I want for my car. In the past Ive looked into thumper heads, and variations of the GT40s. Im thinking a set of GT40Ps and an explorer intake might be a good path. They will also make a good foundation for some boost down the road.

I guess the reason for this post is that Im a bit lost for what to do at this point, is there any other path i might have missed?

How much are you looking to spend? I know used Powerdyne kits can be had for ~$1000, if you'd consider going that route? They do have a bad rep, but I've known people that have had them be reliable, so I think it's all just luck of the draw. Of course, then you're still stuck paying for supporting mods (fuel pump, injectors, MAF, tune), but you'd be pretty well set at that point.

Ive actually highly considered powerdyne before, I like the sleeper appeal of it (silent) and the fact that its self contained, so it can be bolted on and off easily. They only become unreliable when you try to overspin them to up the boost, but they are fine if you run them within their limits (from what i hear). Im looking to spend under a grand though, and I think that wouldnt be possible with any s/c setup. Also, Im thinkin n/a power would be less finiky for a semi-daily driver. Also, gas will take a hit with the pd, and ill have to run premium. With the GT40P's I think gas mileage will stay the same (and run regular) or maybe better than the E7s when i keep my foot out of it. I found this somewhere.. makes sense i think

"GT40Ps are more efficient heads, meaning they use a smaller valve and still manage to flow about the same as a GT-40. The better velocity and revised spark plug position make for a cleaner burn and improved fuel economy. They are also cheap. Overall, they are a great head for performance and daily-driver economy on a budget. "

Maybe you could spend the $$$ on some good used heads. (Or even some new ones. There is the Aussie brand that people seem to like pretty well.) That would relieve the bigest intake restriction...the heads. Home port the OE lower and put it back on. Then, when there is more $$$, get a gooder intake. (and supporting mods.)

That's prolly what I'm going to do. Not the MOST cost effective but a lot of us don't have the cash to drop on everything, all at once. (Even a "cheap" H/C/I hot rod program get get into $5000, including a tuner/tune and everything.)

With a 3,000.00 budget I would go for what all SN95 cars need grunt!! They are heave esp. in vert form and need grunt. So first off get some 4.10's then do h/c/i I would suggest a set of GT40 ol'skool or Thumpers and a Crower 15511 cam if 5 speed or 15510 if auto. Get a cheap used Cobra intake or a Typhoon and elbow to make it work, and a cheapy set of shortie headers. This will more than wake that thing up and keep it nice and drivable as well as keep you in budget.

What all do you have now? Just the two things in your sig?

yes thats all i have right now

If I had the cash Id go gears, o/r H, headers, trickflow street h/c/i (street heat intake, tw heads, tfs1 cam), injectors, maf, tune, smog delete (and maybe some other bolt ons) and call it a day. Since I dont have the cash now, Im thinking 75-100 shot of wet nitrous would be good, because I can continue to use it once I do the h/c/i. The downfalls to nitrous (like i mentioned above) are making me reconsider.

Just to clarify, Im looking to spend under a thousand, not $3,000 (if i had the 3,000, Id go for the trickflow) This is why Im thinking explorer top end (gt40p heads and u/l intakes) and maybe a tfs1 cam or just 1.7 rockers on the stock HO cam. This with some 3.55s or 3.73s should be a good wake up (i think)

FYI. Some Ford Explorer "Sport" came with 4.10 rear gears. (The model with really tall factory tires.) If you're junkyarding your parts and have an auto.

I was having a brain fart, before. It's Patriot that sells the really good (cheap) aluminum heads for 5.0's.

if i were in your position i would def go with the nitrous and use the left over money for gears. as you can see in my sig mine is mostly stock, and with the 125 dry shot i ran 8.2 at 86 still spinning through the traps, so with some better tires i know it has 7's in it. btw i got the nitrous kit used off corral for $220 shipped. depending where you are filling the bottle is only gonna be between $30-$50, and as long as youre not hitting it all the time itll last a pretty good while. just my $.02

EDIT: and with these mods you are always free to upgrade and not touch these things again, and the power gains are only going to be multiplied with further mods

In that case, as painful as it may be, I wouldn't even be thinking about nitrous and superchargers and HCI. Subframes (especially since you have a vert), a good suspension, good brakes, built rear, good tranny are all things that I think need to be addressed before more power. It's no fun to be busting up driveline parts while you can hardly stop along with the sub-par stock 4x4 suspension, but hey at least you'll have lots of power, right? I'm exaggerating (a little), but I think you get the point.

Gcom did spray his for 4 or 5 years on a very stock and tired motor. It actually never blew he just finally got his 331 trick flow motor together. His car ran low 13's high 12's with an auto and bolt ons while on the spray.

for the record, you'll actually see an improvement in gas mileage if you go with forced induction and have a good tune for it. Unless of course you're always into the boost :D alllll about efficiency

you can get a wet shot...and then sell it and make roughly all your money back. I think it'd be a fun run. Just make sure your bottom end is good.
