stripped out smog tube hole on back of head

2 years ago when i took off the smog tubes on the back of the heads and plugged them with bolts, and yesterday after putting a new radiator in my car after the old one blew out and overheated i went to start it. It wouldnt start at first, so i checked fuel pressure and spark, then i went in to get my dad to crank it over while i checked timing. It started on its own, but the bolt was missing and the hole was stripped when i went to put a new one in. ****. Any ideas that dont require engine removal? its too tight of a spot to get a tap in, and i dont know what else to do.

maybe try and cover a bolt in jbweld and put it in there?

Either that ^ or you may have to pull the head and helicoil the bolt hole if you can't clean up the threads with a tap.

go buy a 9/16th inch x 1 inch NC grade 5 bolt and 3 washers that fit the bolt and install them into the smog holes as in the article below click on link this is what i did...i assume you stripped one of the two smaller bolt holes that held the smog tube plate on...if it happens to be the 9/16th bolt hole you stripped just make a plate and drill two bolt holes and seal with the plate and some high heat sealant and use the 2 bolt holes that held the smog tube plate in place. some people have also just cut the smog tube folded it which will also seal the hole..

Its the larger hole, but if i remember correctly isnt there only 1 small hole, so if i were to make a plate it wouldnt seal all the way, but good idea..(anyone know what size the small bolt is?) BTW i thought that the big hole bolt was a 14x1.25?

would the jb weld idea hold up to exhaust pressure?

If you still have the smog tube that runs to the back of the heads, you can take that and cut the tube off the blocks and take those, flip them over so the flat side is over the hole and put the left on the right side and vice versa. Just put a thin coat of high temp gasket sealer on the surface to seal it and use the bolts that originally held the smog tube on. If that doesn't make any sense, I can take some pics of mine for you.

did you try spark plugs to plug the hole. also there is not alot of exhuast pressure through that smog hole.

Just make a plate out of reasonably thick material (at least 0.040 should suffice) and copper RTV is your friend...

So a plate with some high temp sealant and bolt it on with the 1 little bolt, but does anyone know the little bolts size?
