I need more dependable hp, I'm looking to build a stroker motor and had a few q's. First if I was rich this wouldn't be a problem. I just spent 3,500 on a 671 blower for the car. i want to stay with a 302 block but stroke it out to a 347. I thought of buying a r302 block but the 1,600 plus machine work is scaring me away. Are the sportsman block worth the money? they are around 900.00 which seems more resonable. How much hp can you get from a stock 302 block compairedto to a sportsman block? I quess what I'm asking is what would I need to get around 500-600 hp with my 671 blower and 8lbs of boost.

The Sportsman is basically a old Boss block, it should hold 600HP with out an issue. If you were considering a R302 look at the DART, for $1950 it will hold what ever you want and needs very little machining.

save a few buck and get a production 302 with a main gridle support, there good for 600hp too with the support. If i had the money i'd get the dart block but i haven't won the lottery yet.

The local shop I use for all my machining and balancing runs right around $500 total, decking, tanking, magnafluxing, freeze plugs, cam bearings, align hone, bore, final torque plate hone, balance rotating assembly. I do all my own notching and blueprinting...

With 600HP you are really taking a chance with a stock block, girdle or not they still split right up the middle.

dont waste your money, guys are cracking them at the same levels as the stock blocks, ford did add extra metal to these, just not in the right places

It is nowhere near as strong as a boss 302 block, those had 4 bolt mains, and they had alot more beef in the mains, also this block was cast with alot higher nickel content.

Think of the sportsman as more of a mexican block

EDIT: and i definately wouldnt count on a girdle for anything more than making sure my internals didnt get ruined when the block splits. But theres really no point in putting internals in a 302 block because the stock internals are usually stronger than the block
