Guys I just bought a 65 fastback 289 4spd car. I havent had a chance to get in into my mechanic yet, but the car has a very strong gas odor. any ideas, do you think that I should tighten up all the gas connections?

A pic before detailing of the new car

Do you smell this all the time or just when the car is running?

I had a small split in the rubber hose going into the carb that leaked gas when it was running only. That was scarry. Checked all the lines and that was the only problem.

where is the smell strongest? On two of my 67's I've had the accelerator diaphragm wear out and gas leaks out and pools on the intake manifold. very strong gas smell underhood, and when you take the air cleaner off you can see the gas on the manifold, and see it dripping our from the accelerator pump area (front of carb).

snail50,

I noticed that there are large pools of old gas in the valleys of the intake. I just bought the car on friday and have been trying to go through and clean it up. definitely noticed the gas pooling in those valleys. have to rebuild carb?

Clean all the gas off the intake. I removed the air cleaner and covered the carb and then poured water on the intake to flush off the gas. Then dried it with towels.

After you get the gas cleaned off. Start the car and see if you can tell where the gas is coming from. It could be something simple instead of a carb rebuild.
