Why don't they just say it, then? Why the high quote? The honest answer I would accept & would probably not write them off as a potential future customer. As someone that works in a body shop, I can tell you that what they're trying to say is "We'd rather not work on it, so please go elsewhere".

Quote sounds high to me but look at from their side (not defending just trying to ratioanlize) $100 bucks and hour labor, 30 or 40 hours maybe need to pull the engine to gain correct access. They will have to make sure its fixed right if it breaks while your driving then they have liability issues. Still agree with the bad business practice, instead of telling you how they would go about fixing it they just gave you a high price, probably didn't want the work maybe they are not that good at that kind of repair and figure they will make more money changing head lights and painting bumpers. If that's so they should have just been honest with you and saved all the bad thoughts we now have about them.
