Is it possible or a huge pain in the rear to remove heads that are studded while the engine is in the car. I was looking at it last night and it looks like I might have some clearence issues on the drivers side with the brake booster. I am going to start tearing it down tonight and would like to know if I should just pull the motor or not?

EFI or Carbureted makes a difference also.
If the Headers aren't an issue... you can nudge the engine to the side for more clearance from the booster.

It's normally not a good idea to attempt to remove the studs from the block... that's the whole idea behind using studs. Some have stripped the block, and more than a few have stripped the studs doing this. If you were the person who first installed the studs, and you used some type of antisieze... you might have luck getting them out?

Not impossible but def more of a PITA.

Maybe try pulling the studs in the area of concern?

Edited, for the correction. 347HO is right.

Unscrew the studs with the allen wrench, assuming it has those provisions.

When you have cylinder heads studs... you must install and remove the head evenly. It's the only possible way.
In your suggestion, you'd have to remove all or none.

It is fuel injected, with long tube BBK's, I 'm pretty sure I am going to need to remove the headers totally to do this anyway

the headers will have to come out for sure.

when i installed my head studs. i put the heads over the dowels and just ran the studs in by hand and then put the nuts on, i am fixing to take the heads back off tomorrow and i will pull the headers and just the upper studs. if i leave the lower studs it will only have to come straight up a few inches, the long studs would cause the heads to hit the BB or the ac condenser, from what it looks like.

I loosened the motor mounts and jacked up the motor, this gave me enough room to remove the headers and remove the heads while leaving the studs in place.
