Stupid but..how many quarts on an oil change??

I know this sounds stupid but how many quarts should my 06 4.6 take on a change? I put 5 in her and she read low so i put in a 6th but now it seems overfull. Do i need to bleed any? Thanks!

6 quarts, fire it up and check for leaks.

After firing it up for a couple of min. your oil level will go down...although my dealer recommends 6.5 quarts ? I won't put any more than 6 quarts which keeps the oil level just barely a notch below the full mark..

Right on, thanks a lot man. Mine is showing a little over full but i put in 6 total. I will let it go.

Thanks a lot.

Weird thing is i let her drain till not a drop came out, put some in the filter, and the balance of 6 quarts in the pan. Yet it still reads higher than full. Should i drain some? I don't get it. Thanks

What is right thou? I know that the 99-04's had some dip stick issues where it was the same thing.. 6 qts put you at the bottom of full and that was the correct amount of oil....

I would just try 6 quarts first and then after running it for few minutes check your oil level again and if it's less than half full ? add another half quart

Your overcomplicating something really simple. Ford specs 6 qts for the s197 4.6 3 valve engine. Drain your oil till it drips, no need for it to completely stop. Pull your filter off, check that the gasket is not stock on the oil filter mounting adapter. lube the gasket on the new filter and screw it back on. Then fill the engine. Run it for 30 secs. Shut it off. Wait about 5 mins. Check your level. It should be around full. A lil over is not gonna hurt anything. Even a lil under full is fine. Its when its at the first notch at the bottom that you need to add oil.

So which is it then ? some are saying that 6 quarts are above the full mark while other's are posting that Ford recommends 6.5 quarts, no wonder why it's so confusing

Ford recommends 6 qts, thats what was on all the ford literature i received from ford as well as its in the owners manual. Ford never said 6.5, someone jus said there specific dealer recommended 6.5. Jus fill it with 6 and youll be fine. What is so confusing?

Thanks to you, there's no longer anything left to be confused over...I'm just relieved that I had the correct amount of 6 quarts from the very beginning...

No problem bro. This is coming from a tech that would be filling it with 6 if he had an s197 for his own car. I promise you nothing will ever happen to your engine filling it with 6.

When I got mine changed at the shop the other day (I don't have a garage...one thing that sucks about college) they put in 6.25 qts.

Yes, i ran it for like 2 minutes, then like 5, then i drove it to work yesterday (40MI). This morning it is only showing like 1/16" over full so i figure that is OK. Thanks a lot you guys, all of you are always so helpful.

the ford manual does indeed state 6.0 quarts. this always puts the level midway on my dipstick. the proper operating level is in the crosshatch are on the dipstick.
