I need to get some cats on my car to pass emissions here in PA. With my setup in my sig, what should I do? I'm not looking to spend a ridiculous amount on cats here.. I just want something decent that's going to pass and get rid of the stink.

Something permanent, or something to get you through the sniffer? I keep my factory H in the shed and pop it in every two years for emissions. Otherwise, the cheapest one I know of is a Catco H-pipe with two high flow cats, Summit sells it for about $250

Remember - all cats aren't created equal. There are 3 controlled emission substances - HC (unburned hydrocarbons), NOx (oxides of Nitrogen) and CO (carbon monoxide). A single 3-way cat is designed to reduce all 3. There are also 2-way and 1-way cats that only deal with 2 of the 3 or 1 of the 3. Cars that came with 2 cats usually had one 2-way and another 1-way to treat all 3 substances. So know what you're getting. If the car's to only have one cat (on each side) then you need to be sure that they're 3-way cats. And the cats work best when they have excess air in the exhaust system to react and convert the harmful substances (CO, HC and NOx) to unharmful substances (H2O & CO2) - that's what the air pump is for.

i bought the bbk x-pipe with high flows and it doesnt pass i still have to pop in the stock h pipe every 2 years like he said.

Dynomax/Walker make a catted H-pipe with decent 3-way cats for $250. The Dynomax part number is #15606 - but it has been replaced with Walker/Dynomax part number #50500 - it's the same pipe, though.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to get either the Catco H or the Dynomax H. Luckily, its just visual inspection where I live, there is no sniffer yet . But can I expect the stink to go away once I get it on there? Because it didn't bother me that much before, but everytime I drive around with the windows down I smell like exhaust for the rest of the day, and its getting irritating.

I live in PA as well, and I just threw on the stock h-pipe to get the inspection done. The exhaust wasn't even sealed right since I was rushing, and I still passed the emissions inspection. RIght afterwards, I put my off road pipe back on, and will have it on until next year. See if you can find someone near your area that has a stock h-pipe that you could put on for the test. Mine is in my garage right now. Where do you live in PA anyway?

If the Dynomax Yount mentioned is the same price as the Catco, I think I'd go with the Dynomax myself. It will definately smell better, but if yours is that bad it sounds like you have some other issues as well. I have no cats, and no tailpipes- and nobody ever tells me I smell like exhaust. My car really has a smell while it's running, and other cars can smell it on the road, but it doesn't really get in even with the windows down idling around town. I'd say you have some other leaks in there somewhere and maybe need a tune up?

Woah, I grew up in Bethlehem, PA(township) but now live a little bit outside of Allentown. When is your car due for the inspection? My friend knows a place that will do a lick and stick in the Southside of Bethlehem. I could try to contact him if you want. I might be able to let you use my stock h-pipe if you want, just depends when your inspection is due.

Haha, man are you kidding me? I am currently living in Southside, I go to school at Lehigh. My inspection is due in May, and let me tell you I would appreciate you contacting your friend, it would make my life a lot easier.

Does anybody know which style cat is onthe Magnaflow Tru-X pipe ? I live in CA and the emissions are just as strict as PA if not worse and I was considering the Magnaflow x-pipe to accompany my Magnaflow cat-back. Would hate to spend $400+ and not pass smog or visual.

It won't pass a visual - it only has 2 cats. The car came with 4 cats, you need the same amount to pass the CA visual.

Thanks Guys! I've heard both sides of the coin that It will and won't pass visual, but my main concern is will it pass the sniffer here in CA if it doesnt I'll definatley get the catless version X-Pipe and swap the stocky in for the smog test every two years.

Hi,

According to magnaflow they have a one for two cats E.O. number D-193-14/8-7-96 that makes the cats CA smog legal. There is a number on the cats, I think mine is CA 93332 which is for their 2.5" xpipe with two cats. BTW I picked up my 93332 xpipe for $264 from Huston performance in April 2003.
